Descriptive Text A descriptive text is a text that wants you to picture what they are describing: A novel might want you to imagine the characters and see them in your mind. A travel book will want you to see the country it is describing. Descriptive texts often: make use of adjectives and adverbs use comparisons to help picture it - something is like something employ your five senses - how it feels, smells, looks, sounds and tastes

Examples • The morning air was crisp and sharp as Sean walked down the road. • The pavement was slippery and cold beneath his feet like a slimy wet fish.

What are ‘adjectives’? Adjectives are describing words - they tell you more about nouns. Nouns are 'naming' words, they are a person, place or thing. Adjectives tell you more about the Noun. Using adjectives makes your sentences more interesting. e. g. • The pretty girls laughed. • 'girls' is the noun (it says who's laughing). • 'pretty' is the adjective (it says more about the noun).

Some more examples… • The thin captain ate dinner. • Sophie is blonde and gorgeous. • Old Tom and I drove up the steep hill. Adjectives tell you about the noun by describing the noun. Don't confuse adjectives with adverbs. Adverbs describe the verb, they tell you more about an action - e. g. : 'he laughed loudly'.

Points to Remember! Adjectives usually come before the noun. You can also use more than one adjective if you need to. e. g. • The tall, bright, beautiful waitress cleared up the untidy, dirty table. There are rules about the order that you should put adjectives in when you use more than one, but the best way to know is to say the sentence to yourself. Ask yourself does it sound right?
