Guidelines for Writing an Expository Essay • The topic sentence must state what is being explained by the paragraph. • The second sentence will list all materials that will be needed. • The supporting sentences will be step-bystep instructions. • Proofread carefully to make sure all the crucial steps have been included. • Test your instructions. Revise if necessary.
Prewriting – Explanatory Essay • Create two lists. One list should include all materials needed for the process being explained. The second list should order the steps. • Steps should be ordered using words such as first, next, then, after, and last. • Identify the audience.
