Describing the Impossible How to describe in indescribable
Shusterman takes on the challenge of describing the indescribable when he shows us the first alien being among them: “I thought about how I might describe it to others, ” Jason writes, “and realized that it simply wasn’t possible. ” Then he goes and does it. How would you describe the color red to someone who can’t see, or the taste of a peach to someone who has never tasted fruit? Think of other things or states that are impossible to describe, and try to describe them.
Describe this photo First: Choose one particular aspect of the photo and describe that. Example: The flower petal, the stem, the center. Second: Describe every little inch making comparisons to unrelated items. The color of the petal was the color of an October sky at dusk.
You try!
How would you describe how this tastes? (Remember take it in pieces)
Describe this image to someone who can’t see or who has never seen. Use touch, taste, smell.
Mentor Texts • In order to strengthen your writing, sometimes it helps to copy how others have written. We call these mentor texts. • You will use the paragraph found on page 107 as the structure of your piece. • What you will change is the underlined areas. Insert the imagery you created from yesterday. • Look to the text to use your imagery like Shusterman’s.
