Describing A Person I Know and Care About
A Person I Know Objective: Using similes, metaphors and onomatopoeia you are asked to describe someone you like. Each part of the description needs to be written in a complete sentence. Your description will be illustrated by a drawing.
What the description will involve: • You are going to describe someone’s hair, eyes, fingers, legs, feet and height using similes. • You are going to describe someone’s voice using onomatopoeia. • You are going to describe someone’s character using a metaphor.
Describing their hair using a simile If a person has black hair you could say: • Her hair is as black as coal If a person has yellow hair you could say: • His hair is yellow like the wheat in a harvest field. If a person has red hair you could say: • Her hair glows like the flames of a fire. • Aim to compare their hair to show what colour it is and to imply how positively you feel about that person. Task 1 – write a sentence describing their hair.
A Person I Know If you use a simile to describe their eyes you could think about • their colour or • whether they shine or • what sort of look they have – sad or thoughtful or happy or • any other feature that you have noticed. Now think what you could compare them to: what has the same colour or the same look? Task 2 – Describe their eyes in a sentence.
A Person I Know If you think about someone’s fingers think about their shape – • long and elegant or • large or • what sort of shape do people’s hands have if they suffer from arthritis? • any other feature you have noticed. Think about what you could compare their fingers to. Task 3 - Now write a complete sentence which includes your simile.
A person I know • You’re now on your own. • Task 4 + 5 - Using the same principles as you’ve done for tasks 1 – 3, create similes to describe your person’s legs and feet.
A Person I Know • • • Now think about someone’s height: Are they tall? Or small? Or average? Or straight? Think of something which is tall or small or straight to use as a comparison. Task 6 - Write your example of a simile in a whole sentence.
A Person I Know Onomatopoeia and the sound of someone’s voice. • • Does your person have a soft voice? Or is it loud? Or is it harsh? Or is it melodic? Or does it have a strong accent? List words which describe the sound of the person’s voice? Task 7 - Use one or two of your describing words in a whole sentence eg “She ****** when she speaks. ”
A Person I Know The person’s character and use of metaphor. • Here you want to think about the nature of the person you’re describing. • Kind or gentle or supportive or helpful or rough or tough or …. You must try to think of a word or phrase to describe your person. • What has the same or very similar qualities? Use that for your metaphor. • Remember my example of a metaphor: “He was a lion in the battle. ” This suggests he is a very brave person who has to be fierce at times.
A Person I Know • On the sheet of white paper provided draw an • • • outline of your person then fill in the details of their appearance. Label the selected features with your figure of speech. Use colouring pens. Cut out the shape leaving a border and mount on coloured paper.
