Describe Questions National 4/5
There will be questions in any of the sections of the paper where you must describe an event. This requires you to make a number of relevant, factual points. These should be key points about the event and do not need to be in any particular order. These questions can be given up to 5 marks in total but you will not get a Source to help you with this question. You will get 1 mark for each accurate, relevant point of knowledge and a 2 nd mark for any of these points that you can develop. It is therefore possible to gain full marks by giving 5 straightforward points or a smaller number of developed points, or a combination of the two.
Describe the use of new technology during the First World War. 5 Black writing shows the points and red writing shows a small element of development. You are describing the major types of new technology used and could use points such as: • Chlorine gas which temporarily incapacitated the enemy. • Mustard gas and phosgene gas which were more potent. • Gas masks, which made gas less effective. • Tanks, which spread fear among the enemy and provided cover for advancing soldiers. • However, they broke down and had limited strategic value. • Machine guns could kill large numbers of soldiers. • But they often jammed. • Aircraft could spot enemy troop positions.
