The Importance • A thin film of bacteria, plaque, builds on the surface on individuals teeth. 1 • This bacteria will have biochemical reactions that produce acids. 1 • The acids are cause decay on the tooth, known as cavities. 1 • From plaque buildup around individuals gums, there is a higher risk of gum disease. 1 • This plaque can damage individuals gums and the bones that hold the teeth in place. 1 2

The Impact • Maintaining good oral hygiene, brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day, will aid in the prevention of cavities. 1 • Once a cavity forms, the dentist has to fix it. • Brushing and flossing aid significantly in lowering the risk of developing gum disease. It also aids in treating this less severe form. 1 • This mild form does not damage the tissues or bones under teeth that holds teeth in place. 1 • A more severe form of gum disease, periodontitis, needs to be treated by a dentist. This can lead to individuals teeth having to be removed, severe damage to gums and bones. 1 3

The Dental Hygiene Program at CHC • Although Wayne State University does not have dental offices on campus, this program promotes overall wellness for students. • As seen previously, not maintaining oral health can lead to various complications, some where there is severe damage to the bones and gums. • This program is designed to aid in the awareness of maintaining oral health. • Students will receive a toothbrush, chap stick, and hand sanitizer. • A list dental offices nearby with contact information and services will also be available. • It also provides students with tips, such as brushing for 1 -2 minutes two time a day. 4

Demonstration Using the model, student will receive a demonstration of how to properly brush their teeth and floss. Students will see the pressure and circular motions they need to brush their teeth, They will also receive a demonstration of how to brush their tongue- with forward/backwards motions. Lastly, students will see how to floss between teeth. 5
