Density
What is Density: • Density is a physical property of matter, as each element and compound has a unique density associated with it. • In a qualitative manner, it is defined as the measure of the relative “heaviness” of objects with a constant volume • Density may also refer to how closely “packed” or “crowded” the material appears to be
Mathematical Definition: • The formal definition of density is mass per unit of volume • Usually density is expressed in grams per m. L or cc • CC is cubic centimeter which is equal to a m. L • Per statement is translated to division Density = mass = g/m. L volume
Density Examples: Example 1: Calculate the density in g/m. L of aluminum if a 50 m. L block weighs 135 g. Solution: Apply the Definition Density = 135 g = 2. 70 g/m. L 50 m. L
Manipulate Density Formula: Solving for Density: D= M V Solving for Mass: M=Vx. D Solving for Volume: V=M D
Density Examples: Example 2: Iron has a density of 7. 87 g/cm 3. What is the mass of 250 cm 3 of iron? Solution: Apply the Definition 7. 87 g/cm 3 = _M__ 250 cm 3 7. 87 g/cm 3 x 250 cm 3 = 1967. 50 g
Your Turn: 1. A piece of metal has a mass of 45. 6 grams and a volume of 110 cm 3. What is its density? 2. Aluminum has a density of 2. 70 g/cm 3. What is the mass of a cube of aluminum that measures 9. 3 cm on a side? 3. If a block of wood has a density of 0. 6 g/cm 3 and a mass of 120 g, what is its volume? 4. If you have a gold brick that is 2 cm by 3 cm by 4 cm and has a density of 19. 3 g/cm 3, what is its mass?
