Density is a property of matter Density describes
Density is a property of matter. Density describes how much space an object or substance takes up (its volume) compared to the amount of matter in that object or substance (its mass). Another way to put it is that density is the amount of mass per unit of volume. If an object is heavy and compact, it has a high density.
Density can be calculated mathematically. Density = mass divided by volume. Mass Density = Volume
Density Remember thermal energy? ?
Density The states, or phases, of matter usually have different densities because of thermal energy.
Density The density of water is about 1 gram per milliliter - 1 g/ml • Objects or substances with a density of more than 1 g/ml will sink in water. (A) • Objects or substances with a density of less than 1 g/ml will float in water. (B)
Density • The bolt is the most dense. • The ping pong ball is the least dense. • Corn syrup is more dense than vegetable oil. • Rubbing alcohol is less dense than a cherry tomato. • Water is more dense than lamp oil. • Water is less dense than milk.
Density Increasing the temperature of an object or substance can affect the density by causing the particles to move faster and further apart. D = T
Density Decreasing the temperature of an object or substance can affect the density by causing the particles to move slower and closer together. T = D
