DEMONSTRATION
What is Demonstration Demonstration is a teaching method used to communicate an idea with the aid of visuals such as : flip, charts , posters , power point. It is a step by step process. it covers all of the steps that the students need to learn a skill in an effective sequence.
History of Demonstration school Founded in 1966, The rough Rock Demonstration school has received international attention for its experiments. The school is represented by a Navajo board and sponsors numerous income generating and adult education projects. Robert A Roessel Rough Rock’s first director , sums up the school’s priorities.
To which school Demonstration method belongs Demonstration method belongs to the cognitive school Cognitive method include concept mapping, handouts and other lecture materials Cognitive method is based on demonstration.
Characteristics of Demonstration The demonstrator should understand the entire procedure before attempting to perform. All equipment needed should be assembled and pretest before demonstration. Knowledge should be given to the students before starting procedure/demonstration. Carry out the demonstration slowly so the participants do not miss any key points. Make sure the demonstration is visible. A positive approach should be used. Summarize the activity of the session. Evaluate the learning exercise.
Advantages of demonstration as teaching method It helps student acquire knowledge, skill and attitude. It stimulates all the sense organs. It motivates the learner. It helps student to form mental image. It helps in critical thinking.
Disadvantages Demonstration is teacher centered. Good explanation and theoretical background is needed It needs repetition as for better knowledge and for developing psychomotor skill. Managing classroom procedures.
When to use Demonstration It is often appropriate to use the demonstration method when: Teaching technique , procedure , or operation to a small group of learners. There is a need to develop students’ ability to operate equipment or acquire physical skills.
Why do we use the Demonstration method To demonstrate experiments for example equipment in the science laboratory To demonstrate procedure in the classroom and the ward to review or revise procedure to meet a special situation or to introduce a new procedure.
Steps of Demonstration Method Introduction : in this step objectives of the lesson are stated The teacher may be called demonstrator. He demonstrates the activity before the student that is to be developed. Development : Student try to imitate the demonstrated activity. if there is any problem the teacher tries to satisfy them by further demonstration and illustrations. Integration: At this step , the teacher integrates all the activities and then these activities are rehearsed , revised and evaluated.
Principles Learning by doing maxim is followed Skills can be developed by imitation The perception helps in imitation.
Examples of demonstration in the classroom The classroom rules that should be written on the cardboard is a kind of demonstration. students can always read these rules in order to follow the instruction. Using videos and slides to explain the lesson. Using cubes and games to explain mathematics to the preschool level. Using colorful cardboards to explain the alphabets to the preschool level. Using vivid examples such as plants and pets if the lesson was about plants and animals. Teaching student how to make juice in the English lesson by writing the steps on the cardboards, and making the orange juice in the class. Using the laboratory material during science experiences.
