Background Information • Throughout most of American history, the United States had TWO major parties. • Today’s Democratic Party can trace its origins to Thomas Jefferson’s old party. • Today’s Republican Party can trace its origins to the elections of 1854.
Background Info. • American political parties differ from those in many countries, where parties are often organized to promote a particular political or economic ideology such as socialism, communism, or fascism. • Others may represent a given economic interest such as labor or farmers. • Some have been organized to promote a religious group or interest.
Background Info. • In contrast, American political parties are generally not ideological. • Instead, they are made up of a loose collaboration of interests that want to win the next election. • While the parties might differ on the issues, they seek to appeal to the widest possible spectrum of the electorate.
“Liberal” or “Conservative? ” • “C” believes that things should stay the same. • “L” believes things should change. • “C’s” are traditionally Republicans • “L’s” are traditionally Democrats
In General… • Democrats believe – In a larger federal government and will often implement tax plans to try to help the less privileged. – Government must look for the greater good above the individual person and do what is necessary to make the population more “equal. ”

In General… • Republicans believe – That answers do not lay with the government generally, but rather with the people. – In less government interference – More strongly in property rights and less strongly in well-fare rights
In General… • Republicans believe – In economic equity above equality – Morals characterizing the Founding Fathers, which results in general disapproval of abortions, and for some, gay marriage
