RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP • Means that you do your duty as a citizen, you fulfil your responsibilities, and you do what is expected of you as a citizen.
• As a responsible citizen: • You are aware, of and respect, and promote human rights. • Are concerned about the welfare of others. • Take part in campaigns, projects and events. • Fight against the violation of human rights. • Obey laws • Participate in civil and political activities. • Vote in elections • Pay your taxes
EVALUATE YOUR POSITION ON DISCRIMINATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS • Means you critically analyse your own viewpoints, behaviour, opinions and attitudes towards these issues. • You consider your position by taking the Bill of Rights into account. • You participate in projects, events, campaigns etc
BILL OF RIGHTS • Is the cornerstone of democracy in South Africa. • It enshrines the rights of all people in our country an affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom.
DISCRIMINATION • To discriminate against others means to treat them unjustly, unfairly, and unequally because you think that they are different from you. • Discrimination is a violation of human rights.
HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS • Means hurting, disrespecting or acting against someone’s rights. • Eg. Calling someone names. • You are violating her or his rights to dignity. • Eg. Some learners violate other people’s rights to privacy by posting their private information on facebook
PARTICIPATING IN DISCUSSIONS, PROJECTS, CAMPAIGNS AND EVENTS WHICH ADDRESS DISCRIMINATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
DISCUSSIONS • Are dialogues, talks and conversations in which people share information, ideas, experiences and opinions. • Discussions can be formal or informal. • Eg. Online discussions, radio programs, talks and workshops
PROJECTS • Projects that help people whose human rights have been violated usually run over a long time, even years. • They may be run by non governmental organisations (NGO’S), universities, or faithbased organisations. • Projects are always looking for volunteers to help them. • Eg. Youth Rights Project
CAMPAIGNS • A campaign is a series of actions intended to change something. • It can be for or against something • E. g. a campaign for more clinics in a rural area
EVENTS • An event is a planned occasion or activity. • It may be part of a larger human rights campaign or project. • An event may be organised for an anniversary of something or public holiday. • E. g. Human Rights Day
EVALUATION OF OUTCOMES OF CAMPAIGNS AND EVENTS • The evaluation criteria includes: • Identify the aims of campaigns or events • Find out if these aims were achieved.
