Delta Module 1 Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Delta (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, part of the University of Cambridge, is the most recognised in-service English Language Teaching qualification in the world. Delta Module 1 This module focuses on extending and developing candidates’ knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning English in a range of contexts. Different teaching approaches and methodologies, including current developments. 3. Language systems and learners’ linguistic problems. 4. Language skills and learners’ problems. 5. Knowledge of resources, materials, and reference sources for language learning. 6. Key assessment concepts and terminology. Content Historical and current theories of first and second language acquisition. How these theories influence teaching methodologies. Teaching methodologies, both mainstream and experimental. The effectiveness of these methodologies in different learning environments. Features of language systems (e. g. meaning, form, pronunciation, and use) Teaching methodology choices in language systems. Features of language skills (e. g. the subskills and strategies needed by learners). Teaching methodology choices in language skills. The practical uses of a range of resources in a range of teaching contexts. How to apply key assessment principles, such as validity and reliability, to classroom-based assessment Delta Module 1 The Module 1 examination consists of two 90 -minute papers, with a 30 -minute break in between. Delta Module 1 at IH Dublin At International House Dublin, we have designed an intensive two-week course which aims to prepare you to take the Delta Module 1 assessment. During these two weeks, you will cover input sessions covering the course syllabus and you will also participate in exam preparation sessions which are specifically designed to advise you on how to answer the exam questions and to show you what constitutes a pass answer. You will also have the opportunity to participate in two ‘mock’ exams and receive feedback on your performance. 3

Delta Module 1 Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Entry Requirements The minimum entry requirement is: Having at least one year’s experience of teaching English Applicants for whom English is not their first language Candidates must have a level of English equivalent to the Council of Europe Framework level C 1 or above and will be required to show documentary proof of their level. Applicants may be asked to complete some English language tasks as part of the application process. Candidates on the course will need to be able to devote a significant amount of time in the evenings and weekends to coursework. Core elements of the CELTA course The main elements of our Delta Module 1 course are: • seminar input • exam preparation workshops • ‘mock’ tests and feedback Candidates should be aware that the Delta is an advanced professional qualification. It is therefore in the candidates’ best interests to come to the course prepared (see preparation below) but also to devote the required time for studying during the course. 4
