Methods of Delivery Manuscript Memorization Extemporaneous Impromptu
Manuscript Read from a typed copy + no danger of forgetting speech + plenty of time to choose language ahead of time + sounds smoother + better, more precise timing - can sound artificial - no flexibility
Memorized Same as manuscript, but without the physical speech present same + as manuscript - sounds “packaged” - not useful for speeches longer than 4 -5 minutes
Extemporaneous Prepare an outline but not a pattern of words + sounds natural + best opportunity for feedback during speech - can forget key material or interrupt flow of ideas
Impromptu Little to no preparation + sounds like ordinary conversation - often lacks organization and flow - often sounds awkward
Using Gestures Emphatic gestures Transitional gestures Descriptive gestures Locative gestures
Using Notes Effectively Plan not to look at your outline card during the actual speech Note cards should be short phrases only Quote cards should only have one item per card Always write source info on the bottom of every card
Additional Tips Speak with the right volume Vary your pitch Watch your speaking rate Use crisp articulation and correct pronunciation Pause effectively
