Direct Quotation: Start copying into notes section of binder ¡ Means you are using the exact words spoken by the source. l Direct quotes work best when reporters want to: Let the source talk directly to the reader without the writer getting in the way. ¡ Show the source’s sense of humor or other emotion. ¡ Reveal a controversial opinon ¡
Direct Quotations The best direct quotations are short and memorable!! ¡ Insert the speaker’s identification in the middle of the quotation so the reader knows who is speaking. ¡

Write your own grammar rule on punctuating a direct quote. ¡ ¡ You must put a comma before the end quotes to signify an attribution. When you end your quotation, the end of sentence punctuation mark (example: . ? !) comes inside of the end quotation mark. Only put quotation marks around the sources direct words. When adding attribution, put the period at then end of the sentence after the attribution, not inside of your quotation marks.

Partial Quotations ¡ Partial quotations are part of the source’s actual spoken words. l l Quotation marks go only around the words that the source said. Be wary of partial quotations because they are fragmented and choppy.
