DEFINING AND NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Defining Relative Clauses. (especificativas) Las especificativas aportan información importante. Sin ellas la oración pierde sentido. We saw the man who/that came to our school yesterday.

Defining Relative C. Los pronombres relativos son: Who / that: Para referirnos a personas. I saw the girl who / that I love. Which / that: Para referirnos a cosas. We bought the car which/that you recommended.

Whose: Significa cuyo /a / s. This is the boy whose father lives in Cádiz.

I won´t forget the day when / that my grandma came to visit me. Where: Hace referencia al lugar (donde, en que) No se puede sustituir por that ni omitirse. I´ve visited the city where the final will be played.

Non-defining Relative Clauses. My girlfriend, who lives in Granada, is a kind person.

Non-defining Relative Clauses. John, who is a doctor in London, has helped many people in Africa. Eathquakes, which are a great natural disaster, have killed many people.

2º BACHILLERATO DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES WITH PREPOSITIONS PERSONAS: WHO / THAT para persona con la preposición al final de frase y WHOM con la preposición delante del relativo The police found the man WHO / THAT they had been searching for. The police found the man for WHOM they had been searching (uso muy formal).

* DEFINING REL CLAUSES WITH PREPOSITIONS. COSAS: WHICH / THAT para cosas con la preposición al final. WHICH puede además llevar preposición delante. The company WHICH / THAT he works for is very succesful. The company for WHICH he works is very succesful.

NON-DEFINING REL CLAUSES WITH PREPOSITIONS. Mr Carter, to WHOM I spoke on the pone last night, is very interested in our plan. Fortunately we had a map, without WHICH we would have got lost.

NON-DEFINING REL CLAUSES WITH PREPOSITIONS En inglés hablado, usamos WHO y la preposición al final (para personas) y WHICH (para cosas). This is Mr Carter, WHO I was telling you about Yesterday we visited the city museum, WHICH I´d never been to before.
