Defects makes Defects! Mahesh Sariputi, Quality Specialist Ramya HV , Senior Quality Specialist SAP Labs India 1
Abstract An out of Box approach to leverage new defects identified during early development phase to unearth maximum Scenario regression issues during SAT (system acceptance testing) phase resulting in a significant reduction of Customer defect leakage. Ø Test Scenarios are woven around Defects identified earlier in the Dev Phase (Dev Close) thereby plugging most regression leakages Ø This has proven to be an effective means to unearth crucial defects which otherwise would go unnoticed when traditional test techniques are applied. 2
A flexible approach to unearth defects Ø Study the defects found during early development phase Ø Build the scenario’s around the defects prone areas Ø 2 approaches to implement this test technique 3
A flexible approach to unearth defects Phase Analyse Phase During Takt Analyse messages raised in n-1 Takt, in a raised during SAT, in fixed time a fixed time Build Scenarios for Scenario Definition Takt-n based on Phase Analysis Testing Phase During SAT Test the Scenario in Takt-n Build Scenarios for SAT based on Analysis Test in parallel the Scenario in SAT 4

Benefits Ø Ensures high levels of repeatability, predictability and test coverage Ø End-to-End testing Ø Reusable set of artefacts and test design is created before the actual test phase and even improves functional knowledge of the testers Ø Understanding of core business processes and enhancing the core regression library Ø Enabling complete traceability from requirements to test scenarios and defects during various phases of project 6
Conclusion • Maximize the value of good testing practice in Agile environment with rapid and efficient delivery of high quality software through frequent iterations of this approach • It helps tester to open to areas/aspects which they probably never thought about • This concept can be applied in any software application where the development organization working on sprints • If you want to be successful, you should Try, Learn and Apply the new skills required for the deliverables 7
