International Scientific Program and Relations Committee Charges • This committee will focus on developing companion scientific programs with international pathology societies and organizations. • It will also foster strong relationships with pathology organizations as well as organizations which focus on providing/improving the quality of much needed basic cytology screening services and education.

Multimodal Approach to Cytopathology Diagnosis: More Norm Than a Rarity Multi-Faculty Session Sponsored by Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology Moderators: Zubair W. Baloch, MD, Ph. D, Fernando Schmitt, MD, Ph. D. Scheduled for Tuesday June 12 th, 2018 Today’s screening techniques have led to frequent discovery and sampling of lesions of various organs systems, causing a rapid rise in the number of fine needle aspiration specimens, a routine part of cytopathology practice. The cytopathologists are not only required to provide morphologic interpretation but to also incorporate the up to date knowledge of molecular events responsible for the pathogenesis of many of these neoplastic proliferations. Therefore, it is no surprise that the cytopathologist being the keeper and interpreter of limited tissue samples plays a crucial role in the clinical team to manage patients according to the current management and therapeutic standards. In this session the faculty with expertise in various organ systems will provide a focused update on the classification schemes, diagnostic terminologies and diagnostic modalities that are crucial in keeping up with the current standards of managing various routinely encountered pathologies in everyday practice of cytopathology. Education and Training Taskforce Committee Charges § § § The Committee evaluates the effectiveness of the overall PSC CME & CE Programs in coordination with the scientific program committee The Committee is also responsible for reviewing the evaluations from the PSC educational activities and relaying any topics, changes, or improvements for the overall CME Program to scientific program committee. The members of this committee are also responsible for soliciting educational content for the PSC case of the month series.

LC Tao Educator of the Year Award: William Faquin, MD, Ph. D • Dr. Faquin got his MD at UNC and his Ph. D at Harvard, where he also completed medical school. He did his training in pathology and cytopathology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and joined the staff of the Department of Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1998. • His clinical research has been devoted to the investigation of the cytologic detection of head and neck cancers, especially those of the thyroid gland, salivary gland, and head and neck cancers caused by HR-HPV. His research in the field of head and neck pathology and cytology has enhanced clinical care in a number of important areas. • His clinical and research efforts also include tumors of the salivary glands and he was co-chair of the group that developed "The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology. " He was also cochair of the CAP committee that developed national evidence based guidelines for HPV testing for head and neck cancers. • He is the author of 3 popular reference texts on head and neck cytology (Thyroid Cytopathology now in its second edition, Head and Neck Cytohistology, and Salivary Gland Cytopathology). He has coauthored numerous chapters on head and neck cytology, and he is the senior author of the head and neck pathology chapter of the surgical text Cummings Review of Otolaryngology. • Director of HMS CME course “Current concepts in Head and Neck & Endocrine Pathology. ” • Editor-in-Chief of Cancer Cytopathology

Yolanda Oertel Interventional Cytopathologist of the Year Award: David K. Lieu, MD, MBA • Dr Lieu received his MD degree from UC Irvine and an MBA degree from UC Berkeley. He completed cytopathology fellowship at UCLA. He has a faculty appointment at UC Los Angeles and serves as faculty in pathology since 1994 focussed on teaching FNA to rotating cytology fellows from UCLA, UCI and USC at his freestanding outpatient clinic providing pathologist performed FNA and CNB on palpable and non-palpable lesions located in Alhambra CA. Dr Lieu serves as a longstanding faculty of the CAP AP 3 course on Ultrasound guided FNA course. He has published a paper on the physics of ultrasound specifically, uniquely targeted to pathologists and integrated into the course. He is a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) specializing in breast ultrasound and serves as exam item writer, reviewer, and standard setting judge for ARDMS registry exams in sonographic principles and instrumentation and breast ultrasound. He is an American College of Surgeons certified instructor in head and neck ultrasound. • He acquired a MBA degree as he recognized that while providing a high quality biopsy service would be necessary for success, skills in setting up and running a “small business” would be crucial for financial viability of the endeavor. • He performs 2000+ biopsies per year and has a large referral base of 335+ physicians. He publishes a monthly educational FNA newsletter for local physicians.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Terry Darragh, MD • Dr. Darragh got her BS from UCSF and medical degree from Cornell University. She is currently full-professor at UCSF. • Dr. Darragh’s clinical research work is legendary. As the culmination of over 26 years of highly productive, long-term research in the area of HPV-related anal and genital neoplasia, Dr. Darragh recently conceived and organized the Lower Anogenital Squamous Terminology Standardization Project for HPV-associated Lesions (LAST), a collaboration between the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP). The LAST project synthesized current knowledge of HPV associated squamous lesions of the lower anogenital tract and provided important recommendations for harmonizing terminology and the use of biomarkers to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Dr. Darragh was the lead author of the manuscript which was published in Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease, Archives of Pathology and Lab Medicine, and International Gynecologic Pathology in 2012. • As a world-renowned expert in anal cytology, Dr. Darragh developed the anal cytology portion of the CAP Inter-laboratory Comparison Program. She designed the study, analyzed the data and was the lead author of the manuscript published in Archives of Pathology and Lab Medicine in 2013. More recently, Dr. Darragh helped lead and co-authored a comprehensive review of anal cancer screening in women which was co-sponsored by the ASCCP and the International Anal Neoplasia Society, published in the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease in 2015. • Dr. Darragh’s dedication and commitment to long-term studies for over 27 years has been the bedrock for cytologic and pathologic criteria and establishing national and international guidelines for accurate interpretation anogenital cytology. These studies in turn became the basis for developing a vaccine for HPV-related disease and revolutionized cytology in the context of cervical and anal cancer screening.
