Ex-officio Junior Member EB Position n It is my pleasure to announce the additional of a 2 -year term ex-officio junior member executive board position. n To be eligible for this position, the candidates should be a PSC junior member at the time of application. Junior membership is defined as any individual with a doctorate or doctorate-equivalent degree who is actively engaged in formal residency, fellowship or equivalent training n PSC secretary will solicit nomination of eligible and interested candidates from both PSC regular and junior members till Dec 15 th 2017. Self-nomination is encouraged. n PSC nominating committee would then contact nominees to determine their interests and solicit their CV and personal statement of interests and to address the following 3 questions n Why they would like to serve on the PSC executive board? n What kind of skill, knowledge, and experience would they bring g to PSC and the executive board? n What kind of goals would they like to achieve during his or her 2 year term with the PSC executive board? n The deadline for submitting the application is Jan 1 st 2018.

International Scientific Program and Relations Committee • This committee will focus on developing companion scientific programs with international pathology societies and organizations. • It will also foster strong relationships with pathology organizations as well as organizations which focus on providing/improving the quality of much needed basic cytology screening services and education.

Multimodal Approach to Cytopathology Diagnosis: More Norm Than a Rarity Multi-Faculty Session Sponsored by Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology Moderators: Zubair W. Baloch, MD, Ph. D, Fernando Schmitt, MD, Ph. D. Scheduled for Tuesday June 12 th, 2018 Today’s screening techniques have led to frequent discovery and sampling of lesions of various organs systems, causing a rapid rise in the number of fine needle aspiration specimens, a routine part of cytopathology practice. The cytopathologists are not only required to provide morphologic interpretation but to also incorporate the up to date knowledge of molecular events responsible for the pathogenesis of many of these neoplastic proliferations. Therefore, it is no surprise that the cytopathologist being the keeper and interpreter of limited tissue samples plays a crucial role in the clinical team to manage patients according to the current management and therapeutic standards. In this session the faculty with expertise in various organ systems will provide a focused update on the classification schemes, diagnostic terminologies and diagnostic modalities that are crucial in keeping up with the current standards of managing various routinely encountered pathologies in everyday practice of cytopathology. LC Tao Educator of the Year Award: Zubair Baloch, MD, Ph. D • Dr. Baloch received his medical degree from Liaquat Medical University in Sind, Pakistan. After receiving his Ph. D in 1991 he joined the pathology residency at Hahnemann University Hospital, followed by fellowships in surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York and cytopathology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia. Dr. Baloch is currently a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at UPenn. He has authored more than 170 peer reviewed publications in leading pathology journals, and book chapters and monographs; he has delivered numerous lectures, workshops and short courses both at the national and international meetings including ASC, USCAP, ASCP and CAP. Dr. Baloch has also served as the chair of the terminology and morphologic criteria committee of the NCI sponsored thyroid FNA initiative which led to the development of “Bethesda Thyroid FNA Classification Scheme” and is currently serving as a member of core group of Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology. Dr Baloch also served as the member of the core group for renaming of the non-invasive follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma to NIFTP. • Dr. Baloch has been an active member of the USCAP, PSC, ASCP, CAP, AACE & ATA since 1997. Dr. Baloch is a past president of Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology (PSC), he has also served on the PSC executive board and as chair of the PSC scientific program committee for 3 terms. His current role in PSC is the member of the PSC companion society committee and has been instrumental in developing programs for PSC companion programs at both national and international meetings, including ASCP, EFCS and IAC.

Yolanda Oertel Interventional Cytopathologist of the Year Award: William Geddie, MD • Following medical school and anatomical pathology training, completed in at the University of Toronto in 1983, Dr. Geddie has divided his career between community hospital and academic practice. Initially inspired in fine needle biopsy cytology by Torsten Lӧwhagen at the Karolinska in Stockholm, cytology gradually became the sole focus of his practice and for the last 15 years he has practiced as a clinician-teacher cytopathologist at University Health Network Toronto. His interests span the promotion of fine needle biopsy cytology, with or without ultrasound guidance, as a cost effective diagnostic modality in resource limited settings to utilization of cytometric, immunophenotypic and molecular methods in cytology at the other end of the resource spectrum. He is particularly interested in the cytomorphology of lymph nodes and has lectured widely on the topic in Australasia and Africa and co-authored a book, “Lymph Node and Spleen Cytohistology”, with Dr. Andrew Field, Sydney Australia. A passionate microscopist, Dr. Geddie is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, and pursues the elusive personal goal of eventually taking the perfect photomicrograph of a cytology sample.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Richard De. May, MD • Richard (Mack) De. May is an internationally renowned educator and cytopathologist and the author of several texts that are widely used in pathology residency programs across the United States and abroad, including The Art & Science of Cytopathology (now in its second edition), Practical Principles of Cytopathology, The Pap Test, and Cytopathology: The Book of Cells. He has served on the editorial boards of five pathology journals, including the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, and served as editor of Theory and Practice of Cytopathology, published by ASCP Press. He also served on the ASCP Proficiency Testing and Assessment Committee and the ASCP Reference Publications Committee. He has lectured extensively, nationally and internationally, on the subject of cytopathology. Both the American Society of Cytopathology and ASCP have recognized him for excellence in education. He was awarded the prestigious ASCP Mastership recognition by the ASCP. Dr. De. May got his start 1976 when he earned his MD degree from Northwestern University (now Feinberg) Medical School in Chicago and went on to do his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He subsequently completed a fellowship in cytopathology under the direction of William J. Frable, MD, MASCP, at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in Richmond, Va. He served on the faculty at MCV for two additional years before becoming Director of Cytopathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1983. Beginning in 1990, he served for four years as Director of Cytopathology at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston. In 1994, he became Professor and Director of Cytopathology at the University of Chicago. Dr. De. May retired from his medical practice at the end of 2014. He plans to pursue his long-time interest in art and art history. He holds a certificate in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Education and Training Task Force Charges § The Committee evaluates the effectiveness of the overall PSC CME & CE Programs in coordination with the scientific program committee § The Committee is also responsible for reviewing the evaluations from the PSC educational activities and relaying any topics, changes, or improvements for the overall CME Program to scientific program committee. § The members of this committee are also responsible for soliciting educational content for pathology trainees (residents and fellows) for the PSC newsletter.

Education and Training Task Force § Working with Scientific Program committees to review evaluations of all programs offered by PSC at USCAP and other companion meetings. § Working with the PSC Newsletter and Website Committees to prepare timeline and guidance on content material.
