Decreaseing Falls on CVSU Rebecca Birdsong, RN Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing Introduction CVSU has 32 falls this year. Falls with this population can led to poor patient outcomes and prolong patients’ length of stay. Findings DEMT –There was improvement in knowledge SBT – A decrease in the use of tool Project Goals To reduce the number of falls, assisted or unassisted unplanned descent to floor by 20% on the CVSU unit by October 20, 2017. Project Description To increase knowledge on how to perform the and when to perform the Dionne’s Egress Mobility Test (DEMT) and increase the use of the Schmid Bedside Tool (SBT). The healthcare team’s baseline was evaluated on the DEMT and SBT. There was a three question survey to assess knowledge on DEMT. Audits were performed to count the number of rooms using SBT. Data was collected from Quality Improvement (QI) on how many falls had accrued on the unit before project. Then education was provided and reinforced with a visual poster. At the end of the project another survey was collect to assess the change in knowledge of DEMT, and an audit was done on the unit to assess the change in use of the SBT. Conclusions • Provided good data to use with future analyzes. • Did not lead to a decrease in falls. • The SBT needs further analysis to identify decrease use. • Increase the sample population in future analyzes and obtain additional peer input. • “No tool has a perfect predictability” (Dykes, n. d. , p. 15) but the tool should be used consistently.
