Deconstructing Visual Imagery Power. Point Presentation Topic: Police Leilani Diaz Alyssa Palos Tracy Martinez Ferdinand Gabuten
Integrity (Good)
Analysis: Good There are two police officers assisting an injured civilian who looks distressed and in agony. The image is also overlaid with film grain, which is actually dust from the explosion the victim was pulled out. (9/11) The image emphasizes the fact that not ALL police officers and the police force are racist sadists who don’t “Protect and Serve” but instead “Insert Fear and Dominance. ”
Inference: Good The creator wanted to capture this moment with the intention of making the world see that there are good sides of police men as well. In this picture there’s only two officers helping an African American lady, nothing else surrounding the picture, the camera focuses only on them three, creating the meaning that we should all pay closer attention to what happens when the cameras are not around. Police men are not all bad. After all, we’re all human anyway.
Inference: Good (continued) • This is meant to have the viewer have a reality check and make them see the good side in these law enforcers, instead of being blinded by all the negativity that is being shown in the media.
Synthesis: Good In this picture, there is two police men helping out an African American woman that seems to look ill or in pain. I think that this picture can show confusion but also reality. The author is definitely trying to give out a message with this picture. It emphasizes a sense of Pathos, or emotion, to the viewer.
Evaluation: Good • The work seems to fulfill the creators intentions by representing the police officers helping and showing they care for other people. • It seems that the point is to show the police do their job is to protect and serve their community. • I feel that it does do what the creator wanted by the emotion of pain and sadness in the woman’s and officers’ faces.
Evaluation: Good (continued) • Apart from the creators intentions, the work affects me because it makes me glad that I can count on police officers in my country as well as my community. • The work moves me, seeing how the officers will risk their lives to save another. • I feel that the work was worth creating to make the viewers feel that the police are always around to help anybody in need and also to feel safe in their area.
Monstrosity (Bad)
Analysis: Bad A Caucasian police officer is beating an African-American man who has already been incapacitated to the floor. An aspect that stands out is that through the officer’s facial expression, it seems that he is using excessive brute force. Also, the black man who is pinned to the floor is trying to defend himself and has already submitted. Finally, there seems to be two civilians in the background who maybe ignoring the incident, or has not witnessed it yet.
Analysis: Bad (continued) • This image emphasizes the very unfortunate fact that there ARE police officers who do use excessive force against civilians, most evidently to ones of different ethnicity. • It shows that these situations, excessive use of force and blatant police brutality, do exist.
Inference: Bad As you can see, the main element in this picture is the police man abusing his victim. These aren’t the only elements in the picture though, there are people in the background and the victim is also lying down on grass. Meaning that this situation is happening outdoors.
Inference: Bad (continued) • Even though police men do have a good, heroic side to them, they also have a bad, demonic one to them too. Some can be so cruel, that they mistreat people anywhere, including in public with no good reason. • With this said, the creator wants us to open our eyes and see situations for what they really are.
Synthesis: Bad I feel that this picture is very emotional, but also can make people angry. Since the police has so much hatred toward them, & because this happens very often, I think that this picture would make people angry more than anything.
Evaluation: Bad • The work does seem to fulfill the creators intentions by representing an image of a police officer beating up an African American man for no apparent reason. • It also seems that the point is to show police can be aggressive and racist. I believe it does do what the creator wanted to show the brutality against people and is a very serious issue. • This work affects me because it makes me feel that my neighborhood isn’t safe anymore seeing how the police beat people up.
Evaluation: Bad (continued) • The work makes me angry because it seems that the man being beaten is not retaliating and being beat brutally. • I feel that the work is worth creating to show you can’t believe every officer is here to help or doing their job right. It shows that they have a dark side and have their own issues.
