Syllable Division Rules • Look for the vowel * a, e, i, o, u • Find the consonant (or consonants) between the vowels • If there is one consonant, the consonant goes to the left to “close in” the first syllable solid = sol id edit = ed it robin = rob in relish= rel ish • If there is two consonants, split between the consonants. sunfish = sun fish upset = up set cactus = cac tus until = un til • If there are three consonants: • Digraphs stay together bathmat = bath mat dishpan = dish pan nutshell = nut shell • Consonant blends stay together hundred = hun dred sandwich = sand wich children = chil dren
• If there are 4 consonants between the vowels, split between the consonants slingshot = sling shot wingspan = wing span sandblast = sand blast The number of vowels = the number of syllables **** When there are two or more vowels First, find the first two vowels, and split between the consonants Then, find the next vowel, and split between the consonants. Keep doing this until there are no more vowels left. Athletic = ath let ic Wisconsin = Wis con sin Atlantic= At lan tic When reading and spelling words, take it ONE syllable at a time!
Additional Sounds to Remember… • When you see ic at the end of a word, it sounds like /ik/ panic tonic public • When you see et at the end of a word, it sounds like /it/ rocket ticket jacket • When you see ct at the end of a word, it sounds like /kt/ conduct subject object
Schwa…… happens…. . • What is a schwa? ? ? It is an unaccented syllable. • What does that mean? ? The vowels doesn’t sound like the vowel, it makes a short u or short i sound. Here are some words that have a schwa in the second syllable: wagon lemon seven pollen denim oxen
