Declarer Play Establishing and Cashing Tricks When your side holds all the high cards in a suit you can generally cash them in any order. If your side holds all the high cards but one in a suit you can establish winners by forcing out the high card held by the opponents. Similarly, you may have to force out two high cards to establish a suit.
Declarer Play Establishing and Cashing Tricks When establishing or cashing tricks, start with the high cards from the shorter hand. Avoid blocking the suit. AQJ 1054 K 8 Play the king (or low to the king) and then 8 to the ace. QJ 10763 AK 2 Unblock the A and K and the 2 to the Q. If you play the Q first, the suit is blocked and you will need an entry in another suit to cash the length tricks.
Declarer Play Establishing and Cashing Tricks Keep controls in other suits while you establish the work suit. Remember to count the cards as they are played. Notice when a defender discards instead of following suit.
