DECA INTEGRATION IN CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION Why it’s not a bad thing to “teach” DECA anymore!
Integrating DECA competitive events into classroom instruction involves selecting activities from DECA’s Comprehensive Learning Program as authentic learning experiences to help DECA members develop and apply skills outlined in the curriculum
DECA enriches teaching and learning by offering performance improvement tools and resources.
1. Role plays or case studies. 2. Practice tests. 3. School-based Enterprises (SBE). 4. Written Events 5. Advisor input.
A. Identify competencies covered by the role-play or case study. B. Identify how to present it in classroom; large group work, small group work, individual work. C. Utilize local business leaders as judges, mentors, guest speakers. , etc. to bring real world application to these learning opportunities. D. Advisor input I. ROLE-PLAYS OR CASE STUDIES
A. Have students take practice cluster tests and grade themselves. Reading through the answer key will allow them to learn even more. B. Have the students set a baseline score that they should reach. (ex. Nothing less than an 80%). C. Have students identify areas (competencies that they need reviewed or covered). D. Advisor Input II. PRACTICE TESTS
A. A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods/services to meet the needs of the market. B. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in marketing, finance, hospitality or management. C. Follow DECA Certification process. D. Advisor Input. III. SCHOOL-BASED ENTERPRISE.
A. Adapt DECA format to meet the needs of your students. 1. Delete or adapt activities that don’t fit your learning objectives. 2. Simplify or provide more detailed information to direct your students to the learning competencies you want covered. 3 Reduce the size of the project to match your students ability level. (I used to make my projects 12 -15 pages for our 30 page manuals. Students could do more pages with permission). 4. Allow the best projects to be expanded to use for competition. 5. Advisor input. IV. WRITTEN EVENTS
VI. OTHER- ADVISOR INPUT AND SUGGESTIONS.
