DEBATE Chapter 11
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS Do you feel you have a moral responsibility to the poor parts of your community?
How diverse opinions can lead to a rich conclusion • • • Discussion is the fruit of different points of view on a given topic Truth is reality; it can’t be changed. Each person is capable of seeing a different part of that reality His/her view can be helpful to others in seeing the whole reality. Listening is therefore important…why? Each member of the discussion can be enriched or enrich Can a rich conclusion be arrived at if everyone wants their own idea? Expressing oneself in an orderly way is also important…why? In order to be heard and understood; present your thoughts and facts in a way acceptable to others
What is their position on the debate • Marianne • Charles • Alice • Martina • Frank • Matthew
How diverse opinions can lead to a rich conclusion • What makes them agree? • Discussion and reasoned argument • Matthew and Albert help the group come to the view that it would be worthwhile to help Scorpion • Two heads are better than one…TRUE or FALSE? • Alone you go faster, together we go further
The Importance of Listening • The best ideas and solutions are found when we listen • Do we find ourselves thinking of what to say once theyare done talking? • This is a bad habit which makes communication sterile; neither is enriched by the other. Simply noise. • Each person can shed light on that reality by his or her own view; In order to get a clearer idea, its necessary to hear several views • For example, observing a cube • Be cautious of prejudice (bias) as it impedes the effort to understand the truth of things; without it one can find best solutions possible to problems. (Think of Charles’ bias towards Scorpion)
The Importance of Listening • Another hinderance to fruitful debate is imposing one’s point of view on the others. • It is also mistaken to think that all reality is only opinion and that all opinions are equally valid. • Not all opinions are valid points of view but are the result of a faulty vision of reality. E. g. a cube of 15 sides • Frank contributed an idea which neglected to take into consideration certain circumstances; Albert came up with a more original idea. • Frank should not feel bad; provided the group finds the best solution, all our ideas –well explained and listened to- will help us get there.
The Importance of Expressing Oneself in an orderly way • Group work: Read out Activity 11 • Rights come with duties • Others have the same rights and it is our duty to abide by other people’s rights as well as assert our own. Rights imply reciprocity • Use clarity and logic when expressing yourself • understand the problem at hand, • find the right solution, • Explain it using concise words and statements • The conclusion will be the fruit of orderly and logical argumentation
