ABOUT THE FILM Director: Paul W. S. Anderson Framed for a murder he did not commit, three-time speedway champ Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) finds himself at Terminal Island, the country's toughest prison, but he gets an unexpected chance at freedom when the warden offers a choice: Compete in the Death Race as a mythical driver called Frankenstein, or rot in a cell forever. Riding in a car equipped with flamethrowers and grenade launchers, Ames must survive a gauntlet of vicious criminals to win his freedom -- or die trying.
Scene: Death Race – Jenson Fights Pachenko Frankenstein is working on his race car for the next race. In the ambient there is a slight echo and both characters in this scene have a dialogue. SFX is used to show the character throwing a piece of equipment. There’s no sound, nothing but footsteps on a wet ground creating a “slushing” effect. The atmospheric sound acts as a motif indicating that something is about to happen revealing that Frankenstein is on a mission, seeking revenge.
In this scene, “Frankenstein” is surprise attacked by one of his rivals in the Death Race. He is breathing loudly and is in agony as he is being strangled with a chain whilst being confronted by his enemy. There is also dialogue in this scene as his enemy approaches him saying “are you looking for me? ” To make this an intense scene the director uses silence. By doing this the director is anchoring our viewing and hearing to this scene. In this scene, Frankenstein is released from the chain around his neck and immediately gets himself into a fist fight. Bodily contact is exaggerated/emphasised for cinematic effect.
