Death of A Salesman By Lindsey Anderson
Death of A Salesman ● ● Written by Arthur Miller Play Centered in the late 1940 s in New Jersey Four Main Characters: ○ Willy Loman (Protagonist) ○ Linda Loman ○ Biff Loman ○ Happy Loman
Summary Willy Loman is a middle aged man that struggles with his job as a salesman. His entire life, Willy has dreamt of achieving his “American Dream” of being a great salesman who provides a wealthy, luxurious life to his wife and family all while being loved by his community. This desire to achieve his dream is a value Willy carries over to his two grown sons, Biff and Happy; however, it hurts their father-son relationship in the process. Throughout the play, Willy alternates between flashbacks to happier times and present day. This causes his sons force Willy to face reality and accept his life as just an ordinary American until Willy can’t take the truth anymore.
What I liked Death of A Salesman because it was an enjoyable read while exploring realistic themes and ideas that are still applicable today. It gives a different perspective on the idea of the American Dream that isn’t talked about. Additionally, the stage directions are descriptive of facial expressions and actions which add depth to the conversations between characters allowing them to feel even more real.
What I disliked I felt like at times it was hard to keep track of what was happening in present time in the play and what was a flashback from Willy because the stage directions don’t always mention the time shifts. Further, there a couple scenes where Willy is shown cheating on his wife or fantasizing about another woman. Although it adds another element to understanding Willy’s character, I felt it should either be elaborated on more or not added at all. Finally, the content of the play is super depressing because we see how Willy’s dreams are unrealistic and ruin his life and happiness.
Review I would recommend this play to everyone, including future AP Lit students.
