Dear boss, After much discussion with Latiwonk she has finally agreed to accompany me on the exploration. Though she has made one change to our plans. Our main focus is now women of Egypt, though don’t worry boss we will study about Egypt's culture, farming and even some of there writing and mathematic skills. We have already started packing for the journey, we will send you a list of all the equipment we will be needing. We are packing a bit of everything because we are not very sure what it will be like in ancient Egypt. By the way could you please have the time adapter sent to us. This piece of equipment will be vital in our journey threw the time of ancient Egypt. I will no longer be writing to you, instead Latiwonk will be keeping you posted on her diary blog about what is happening in Egypt. (You might need to start studying a little hieroglyphics you’ll see what I mean when you see Latiwonks first letter. ) Yours robotically, Emit What should I say to boss ? Hmmm…. • Writer: Latiwonk • Time : 3031(we’ll use the time adapter when we land) • Current Location: In space somewhere Hello boss. This phrase is what the hieroglyphics represent. I hope you have been learning hieroglyphics because I will very often be using these funny pictures in my report. Emit and I hope to learn more hieroglyphics once we arrive in the ancient times. Anyway i am writing to tell you that I have sent a list to you containing all the things we are taking to the ancient times of Egypt. The destination we are currently going towards is Cairo, although we we’ll be landing just before Cairo in a place 300 miles away from Cairo called El Armana. The reason we are visiting El Armana is because we will be meeting our first ever Egyptian pharaoh ( who isn’t a man!!). I’ll reveal the pharaoh next time. I’ll try and keep you updated boss, Signing off Latiwon. K
Are we there yet? Urg!
• Writer: Latiwonk • Time: • Current location: Hello all blogers and Boss, We landed in a rather fishy situation, you see our time adapter brought us here, but made us land in the middle of a fishing expedition. (Emit wasn’t much help yelling as loud as he could in ENGLISH that he was drowning. ) After many staring Egyptians helped us out of the water, a fisherman priest (who thought we were the Re’s messengers) took us to Nefirtit. She is very pretty. I told her we were sent from Re the God of Sun to inspect her country. I picked Re because her husband her both picked one main god which was Re. She believed every word and has promised to be our guide! Anyway better get to sleep busy day tomorrow nefferiti is showing us the way the Egyptian hierarchy is run and if were lucky might agree to an interview. . Latiwon. K
We must take them to the Queen Do fish look like that ? Help I’m drowning! Calm down!
Wonderful I’ll show you around Uh… We come from the God of Re to Uh. . Inspect you Uh…. . Yeah that’s what were doing.
• Writer: Latiwonk • Time: • Current location: Hello all blogers and Boss, I think it is only fair to tell you living with the queen is a life of luxury as we got to experience this morning. When me and Emit sat down at the Queens table for breakfast we expected very nice food but describing the food as nice is an understatement. It was Brilliant! There was loads of golden honey, ripe grapes , wine, and goats cheese, all natural of course. I think I would really like it if everyone in our world cooked and eat food like this. Anyway after breakfast Nefertiti took us to meet many of the important people in Egypt such as the nobles and priests. (for blogers who want a full look at the hierarchy turn to the next page. ) I don’t think Emit was too impressed by the nobles because they were all members of the pharaoh’s family, Emit also thought that this was extremely unfair to those who aren’t the pharaoh’s relations, but could probably do a better job. I’m just going to say this one thing before I sign out I wish I was a PHARAOH! Latiwon. K
Egyptian society like many civilizations had a social hierarchy, the hierarchy gave power and wealth to those at the top of the hierarchy. The Pharaoh and Chief Wife- Had basically total control of Egypt. The Law, jobs, gods, and rest of the hierarchy. The Vizier- The second most powerful official. He was the Pharaoh's most trusted advisor. Nobles- Relatives of the Pharaoh. There jobs were: priests, scribes, doctors, lawyers and military officials. Officials and scribes- officials kept the workers in place. Scribes were the main writers in Egypt. Craftsmen- Thy crafted and designed the pharaoh’s orders. Slaves, labourers & peasants - The unskilled hard labourers of the Pharaoh’s wishes. Emit thought this looked a bit like a food pyramid. HA HA
• Writer: Latiwonk • Time: Good day blogers and Boss, After yesterday’s meeting with a bunch of very important people Emit and I felt it was very important to see how the other half lived. So that’s exactly what we did, we went and interviewed farmers, slaves and workers. I can tell you now that there lives are not a walk in the park and they have to work very hard. A lot of the farmers were sunburnt and some were worried sick about the flood. Emit thought there life must be very unpredictable since there main source of food and water was so unreliable. While me and Emit watched a farmer cutting wheat we saw a sharp looking thing in his hand. The farmer told us it was a sickle and boy were we amazed. We interviewed a farmer who took us to the Nile banks and showed us what other amazing things the Egyptians used the river for. The Nile is soooo beautiful a bit like a long serpent. The Nile ran all threw Egypt and then into the Mediterranean sea. The Egyptians survival depended on the Nile, not only the flooding but also watering the plants and being there main drinking source. On the way to the Nile Emit and I saw that the clever Egyptians had dug channels leading from the Nile into there gardens. The farmer was very helpful and not only explained the seasons of the river but also what they did during the flooding and growing times. ( we translated our interview to English) Here is what happened……. Latiwon. K
EMIT: So what do you think are the special things The Nile brings to Egypt? MR. X: Well Emit, I believe that the Nile is a blessing in many ways. Not only does it supply us with our water and fish the Nile can also be like a road. We can use the Nile to travel all over Egypt. For the safety of this farmer we have decided to call the farmer Mr. X Emit: What do farmers call the fertile land? Mr. x: We call it the black land since the colour of the soil is black. Emit: What animals do you use in daily work. Mr. X: Um, I think that depends what you want to do. I use a oxen to plough the fields in planting season. Emit: what would happen if the flood didn’t come to Egypt? Mr. X: Many people would die or become extremely sick due to famine or lack of water. Emit: Do you get the same amount of crops back every year? Mr. X: No of course not. There are many factors that could effect the amount you get back. For instance the Nile might possibly not be able to rise high enough or the locusts might come. Emit: How did you measure the amount of water in the Nile? Mr. X: well Emit, there are markings on the wall sort of like numbers they can roughly tell the people how high or low the Nile currently is.
During Flooding season the Nile will rise up very high sometimes even to a dangerous level where lives could be at risk. For farmers this is the least busy time for them.
After the flood is over the land becomes fertile due to the silt the flood leaves behind. The farmers now start to plant seeds into the soil and await for harvest. During the waiting period most farmers work on the pharaohs orders e. g. pyramids and statues.
Harvesting season is the final season in the cycle. Farmers now cut and collect there food. Most farmers will try and store there food for as long as possible, because if stored incorrectly farmers may find themselves going hungry before the next cycle.
• Writer: Latiwonk • Time: • Current location: What’s up blogers and boss? So what has been happening with Emit and I, well we have been going back to school and exploring what life as an Egyptian boy or girl would have been like. Life for boys and girls were very different. Boys were allowed to attend school and study subjects such as mathematics geography and engineering. Whereas Girls had to stay at home and learn how to cook and clean. ( I know, I know isn’t Egyptian history sexist!!) But it wasn’t all bad for the girls, sometimes the boys would get hit by a cane to keep them in line or get there attention, I suppose girls in some way at least didn’t have to suffer that. A special shout to anyone interested in hieroglyphics turn to page 2 for a look at ancient writing and how it effected the people of Egypt. . Latiwon. K
So class what does frog + person equal? + Well Emit, Basically all the numbers up to 9 are represented with there own number of sticks e. g. the number 2 has 2 sticks. The others are basically symbols that represent numbers. = Um, Latiwonk what are they doing and why is there a picture of a frog on the board?
Hello to all you hieroglyphic fans and boss, Hieroglyphics are quite an extraordinary thing not only did it give power to those that could write but also helped the highly ranked Egyptian send messages to each other. Nearly every one in politics needed a scribe either to send messages to the pharaoh and other fellow politicians or receive them and get the scribe to read them. Since only officials and scribes were taught how to read and write they never had a hard time finding a job. The Egyptians also were able to preserve some of there history threw writing hieroglyphics on the walls. = T = E = R = N = S Just some basic symbols
• Writer: Latiwonk • Time: • Current location: Hi Blogers and Boss, This is Latiwonk and I am happy to report to all you women out there that Emit and I have discovered something rather amazing. You see for nearly all this trip I have been complaining that women are not equal and we have no rights and so forth, but yesterday Emit proved me wrong. Well sort of Women are still treated as non equals of men. They can never be head of house, they can never have more power or rank then men do In the hierarchy, most women don’t even have the rights to go to school. I realized that this actually starts with the king as an example. If the people of Egypt listen to the Pharaoh and treat him like a God then he should set a better example. For one Pharaoh should not have many wives he should stick to one wife at a time. The Pharaoh in my view should also abdicate throne of Pharaoh to one of his kids one who has proved themselves worthy of the job not just because his successor is a son. Though what Emit has proved though is that Women actually have better rights then most of ancient world. We interviewed Queen Nerfetiti yesterday and she explained to us about how being a pharaoh works and also how women and men are treated.
• Latiwonk: Thankyou for your interview time Re will be pleased with you. I’ve been quite curious what exactly is a pharaoh’s job? • Queen: Well Latiwonk, a pharaoh has many duties. He must make the law of his country, he must show his people how to live and worship the gods, but most importantly he must have a successor. • Latiwonk: Do you think that women are fairly treated in Egypt? • Queen: Yes I think we treat our women quite fairly. I believe in Egypt it matters not a man or women but more what social rank you are.
Hey Blogers and Boss, Well that it. It’s the end of Emit’s and mine adventure in Egypt. There are so many things I think we could learn from the Egyptians and so many things that the Egyptians could learn from us. WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THEM The Egyptians didn’t judge men and women by gender (most of the time) but by social status which in a way has negative and positive sides. I think by judging people this way at least men and women of the same social status may of a chance of equal ness. WHAT WE DON”T WANT TO HAVE We don’t want the hierarchy being so unfair. What happened to take from the rich and give to the poor. The people born at the bottom of the hierarchy such as the worker, farmers and slaves could not escape there fate. If they were born a farmer or slave they would remain one until they died there was no way out. We also definelty don’t want the pharaoh’s attitude towards picking girls as there successor. I believe if there was a perfect world and a perfect hierarchy then women and men need to be equal or at least pretty close to being equal and not just the males dominating.
