WHAT IS DEAF-BLINDNESS? • Deaf-blindness is not just a deaf person who cannot see, or a blind person who cannot hear. The two impairments together increase the effects of each. • People of all ages can have a sight or hearing impairment. It may have been from birth, or due to deterioration later in life. But most deafblind people have some vision and hearing.
HOW DO YOU TEST FOR DEAF-BLINDNESS? • If your baby is born deafblind, this will usually be picked up during newborn screening.
HOW TO TEST FOR DEAF-BLINDNESS AS AN ADULT • In most cases, deaf-blindness develops as a person gets older. It can happen gradually, so you may notice that your vision and/or hearing are getting worse at first.
HOW TO TEACH A STUDENT WITH DEAF-BLINDNESS • Bonding with the child is critical for the instructor. • Safety is also of critical importance to this child. Not only must the environment be made safe for him, but he must feel safe in order to move around on his own.
HOW TO TEACH A STUDENT WITH DEAF-BLINDNESS • The curriculum focus for a child with deaf-blindness should be on bonding and developing interactions and routines for expanding the frequency and functions of communication. • They can not learn from what they see like the deaf child does. • They can not learn from listening like the blind child does. • They learn only by what they do.
