Was arrested and thrown into prison Deaf students & Jean Massieu petitioned for his release • Received official pardon one hour before his scheduled execution • Took J Massieu and L Clerc to London to meet T. Thomas Braidwood Academy • Total Communication? ? • Combined oral, gestures and signs • The Braidwood School taught speech but also used British Sign Language. • T Gallaudet tried to visit this school but they didn’t want to share their methods. • Private school • Located in Britain & Scotland • In 1815 grandson opened a school in Virginia –was only open one year. • Francis Green impressed with Charles progress.

American School for the Deaf • Gallaudet and Clerc founded the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut. • Originally met in a hotel • State paid for only 5 years of education • In 1818, students age ranged from 10 -51 • T. Gallaudet was the prinicipal • L. Clerc was the teacher • Classes: reading, writing, math, georgraphy, history & Bible • Schools were an important part of the deaf community
