How Deaf Education got started � Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet meet Alice Cogswell who was a deaf child. � Gallaudet had a passion to teach deaf children after he meet Alice Cogswell. � He went to Europe to learn more about the deaf culture. � He started a deaf school in the U. S. in 1817. � He named the school the Connecticut Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb and it was later renamed American School for the Deaf.
Deaf Culture � Deaf people communicate through sign language. � Just like we have different languages so do deaf people they are different sign languages for different countries. � There are schools and colleges for the deaf. � There also deaf athletic leagues.
Training � You have to be trained to teach the deaf you cannot get a regular teaching degree. � There are many different opportunities if you teach the deaf. � You have to go to college for 4 years.
Requirements � You have to have a special degree to teach to the deaf. � You have to know sign language. � You have to have good lip patterns so they can read your lips. � You must have a positive attitude toward deaf people.
