Founding of De Stijl • World War I: destruction and devastation • De Stijl was founded to express a Utopian harmony and order – Rejected naturalistic representation – Stripped down to just the basics

Characteristics • Simplification of art to bare essentials of form and color • Straight lines • Rectangular planes • Primary colors – Red, yellow, blue

Collapse of De Stijl • Theo van Doesburg died in 1931 in Switzerland – He held a pivotal role in the group – Without him, the group collapsed • Some artists remained in accordance to De Stijl’s basic ideas – Rietveld continued designing De Stijl furniture – Mondrian continued working in the style he initiated in 1920 – Van der Leck left and returned to his original style
