Traffic Safety Assessment • A Traffic Safety Assessment is an evaluation conducted by DDOT staff in response to targeted citizen concerns regarding a specific safety concern • Request an assessment by: – DDOT’s 311 system (https: //311. dc. gov) – Support from ANC Commissioner 3
Types of Assessments • Types of Assessments – Intersection Safety • Unsignalized • Signalized – Traffic Calming – Roadway Segments – Alleys 4
Assessment Process • DDOT works with ANC to determine specifics of the safety concern • DDOT determines the type of assessment needed • Data Collection & Field Assessment 5
Data Collection & Existing Conditions • Existing Conditions & Field Assessment – – – Intersection control type (if applicable) Nearby land uses Roadway configuration Roadway functional classification Ongoing or projects completed in recent past at the assessment location • Data Collected: – – – Speed Volume Signal timing (if applicable) Turning movement counts (if applicable) Crash data 6
Assessment – Next Steps • DDOT presents assessment results and proposals to ANC or Transportation Committee – Are countermeasures warranted? – What types of countermeasures? • Issue Notice of Intent (NOI) and review comments, if applicable • Implementation 7
Assessment – Comments • Assessments typically take about 120 days • The more specific the description of concerns and location, the better • DDOT will coordinate with ANC at multiple points during the assessment process 8
