Activator: What are some things that you notice? What are some things that you wonder?
Today’s OBJECTIVE: • I will be able to use tape diagrams • So I can find an equivalent ratio when given the part-to-part ratio and the difference between those two quantities. • I will demonstrate my understanding by completing at least 3 real world problems correctly on my white board. • 6. RP. A. 1 6. RP. A. 3
Language Objective • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use all four language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing the academic math language vocabulary or ratios. I will draw tape diagrams to find an equivalent ratio when given the part-to-part ratio and the difference between those two quantities. • I will demonstrate my understanding by reading real world problems and completing at least 3 situations correctly. • 6. RP. A. 1 6. RP. A. 3 • Academic math Language Vocabulary: • Tape diagram, equivalent ratio, part-to-part, part-towhole, difference of two ratios/quantities
Pg. 16 Write four different ratios 5 7 The ratio of cars to trucks is __ : __ trucks 7 5 The ratio of _______ to cars is __ : ___ total vehicles 5 cars The ratio of ____ to _____ is ___ : ___ 12 total vehicles 7 trucks The ratio of ____ to _____ is ___ : 12 ___
Cars : trucks Trucks : cars t r a -P P o t t ar Par Wh t-toole Cars: total vehicles Trucks: total vehicles
Pg. 16 b. Make a tape diagram that represents the quantities in the part-to-part ratios that you wrote. Cars Trucks c. How many equal-sized parts does the tape diagram consist of? 12 d. What total quantity does the tape diagram represent? 192 vehicles
Pg. 17 e. What value does each individual part of the tape diagram represent? f. How many of each type of vehicle were registered in August? 5 x 16 = 80, there were 80 cars registered in August 7 x 16 = 112, there were 112 trucks registered in August

You Do… Today you will work on your whiteboards to complete at least 3 problems. You will have roughly 5 minutes to complete each problem using a tape diagram.
Problem 1 Last summer, at Camp Okey-Fun. Okey, the ratio of the number of boy campers to the number of girl campers was 8: 7. If there were a total of 195 campers, how many boy campers were there? How many girl campers? Answer: 104 boys and 91
Problem 2 The student-to-faculty ratio at a small college is 17: 3. The total number of students and faculty is 740. How many faculty members are there at the college? How many students? Answer: 111 faculty and 629 students
Problem 3 The Speedy Fast Ski Resort has started to keep track of the number of skiers and snowboarders who bought season passes. The ratio of the number of skiers who bought season passes to the number of snowboarders who bought season passes is 1: 2. If the 1, 250 more snowboarders bought season passes than skiers, how many snowboarders and how many skiers bought season passes? Answer: 2, 500 snowboarders, 1250
Problem 4 The ratio of the number of adults to the number of students at the prom has to be 1: 10. Last year there were 477 more students than adults at the prom. If the school is expecting the same attendance this year, how many adults have to attend the prom? Answer: 53 adults
