WRITING PROMPT: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Formal Assignment: Response to Irony in Shakespeare in Love Write a FIVE paragraph essay analyzing the use of IRONY in the film Shakespeare in Love. Essays will follow the structure noted below: Paragraph 1 must include thesis "Shakespeare in Love utilizes various forms of irony to represent the chaos and intrigue of the Elizabethan Theatre". Paragraph 2 will examine and give specific details surrounding the dramatic ironypresent in Viola posing as Sir Thomas Kent to play Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Paragraph 3 will examine and give specific details surrounding the verbal ironypresent in Queen Elizabeth telling Viola "I know something about a woman in a man's profession. Yes, by God I know about that". Paragraph 4 will examine and give specific details surrounding the situational irony present in Viola playing Juliet in the stage performance of Romeo and Juliet at the end of the film. Paragraph 5 will restate thesis, varieties of irony, and feature a concluding statement.
Essay Criteria: 45 minute timed writing 2 pages in length 12 point Times New Roman font • Double-spaced • No header needed • Body paragraph should included detailed examples from the film and/or background context from the Shakespearean Jigsaw. • You may use the Shakespeare in Love viewing guide as a resource • 20 Point Formal Rubric will evaluate grammar, paragraph/sentence structure, understanding of irony and of its application in the film. .

ACT II, SCENES 1 -2 RECAP • Banquo and his son, Fleance are walking through the castle at night/ Banquo admits to sleeping problems • Enter Macbeth/Banquo tells him that he had a dream about the witches. Macbeth claims he has not thought about it too much. • Banquo and Fleance exit. Macbeth hallucinates a dagger floating through the air.
