Six-figure grid references • Six-figure grid references are used to locate objects or places within a grid square and so are much more accurate than fourfigure grid references. In order to use six-figure grid references, you need to use the numbers on the grid lines plus an estimate of where an object is located within the grid square. 29 In this example, the tree symbol is located at 344286. The first task is to give the four-figure grid reference of the square. This is: 29 34 4 28 5 Now imagine the bottom and side of the grid square divided into tenths. The tree is located 4 tenths of the way along the bottom of the square. So we add a 4 to our grid reference. 5 The tree is located 5 tenths of the way up the side of the square.
