About Mr. Nelson • Born and raised in Phoenix • Attended college at Northern Arizona University • Graduated in 2012 with a degree in Biology and Secondary Education • This will be my 6 th year with ASU Prep • Got married on New Years Eve of 2017 • Live in Gilbert with my wife, Riley, and our cat, Chairman Meow

Classroom Procedures
Entering / exiting the room 1. Please wait quietly in the hallway until entering the room. 2. No students should be inside the classroom without a teacher present unless given prior approval. 3. Once dismissed, push in your chair, collect your materials, and exit the classroom.
Start of class 1. Class time starts the moment you enter the classroom. 2. You will complete a Warm Up the first 5 -10 minutes of class each day. • To be collected as an academic grade at least once a quarter 3. Directions will be on the whiteboard when you enter the classroom.
Supplies • One notebook dedicated entirely to STEM/Bio • A small binder with loose-leaf paper and pockets is highly recommended • Spiral bound notebooks will be acceptable • No composition notebooks, please • A writing utensil every day • A scientific calculator Recommended: • White board markers • ASU Prep Lab Fee: $25 (payable at the front office)
Bathroom policy • One student may leave at a time after informing Mr. Nelson and signing out on the bathroom pass sheet. • A student-teacher conference will be scheduled and home will be contacted if the bathroom is used more than necessary. • While lecturing: Quietly raise two fingers in the air until motioned to go. Sign out and take a pass, and then sign back in. • While working: Politely ask to be excused. Sign out and take a pass, and then sign back in.
Getting supplies • Includes but is not limited to the tape, stapler, and the pencil sharpener: • While lecturing: Should only use the pencil sharpener if necessary. Quietly go to the back table, use the pencil sharpener and return to your seat. • While working: Use all as needed at the front table and counter.
Turning in work • Make sure your name and the date are both located on your work • Place it in your class bin located on Mr. Nelson’s desk
Late work • Absent/lost papers: Located in the bin on the counter by the window. • If you are absent, check Weebly and the bin BEFORE talking to Mr. Nelson.
Late Work • It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of his/her absences and make-up work. • In the event that you are absent, visit my Weebly webpage where you will find the course’s online planbook. If there any handouts that you missed, you can download or get them from the make-up work bin in the classroom.
Computers • You are responsible for making sure to inform Mr. Nelson of any damages or malfunctions while using the computers. • Computers will be used for academic purposes only (used to look up grades during learning lab or after class work is completed). You need to use your computer number only.
Phones • Phones should be silenced and out of sight at all times, however, there may be times in which Mr. Nelson will allow cell phone use • Times in which phones may be appropriate to have out in class: • You are asked to check powerschool • You are using them to time a reaction or as a basic calculator for Mr. Nelson’s class • You have spoken with Mr. Nelson prior to class about an issue in which you might need to be contacted by your parents • Monday Learning Lab reflection • Times in which phones are not appropriate to have out in class: • During any notes, direct instruction, or presentations • During all labs • During any time in which you have work that still needs to be completed
Phones • You may be asked to put your phone away at any time at Mr. Nelson’s discretion • Repeated requests to put your phone away can result in a parent/teacher conference or loss of all phone/technology privileges

Misc • Getting Mr. Nelson’s attention: You raise your hand!!!!! • Notes: Expectation is for you to remain silent as possible while taking notes (talking prolongs notes and wastes your time). • Be open to try new techniques with notes and studying to help prepare you for the university level. • Table colors: Used during some group activities to give specific roles. • Unless otherwise specified, all assignments are due at the beginning of class on the day they are assigned. • OCCASIONALLY online submissions will be accepted up to 11: 59 pm of the due date
Ice Breaker • “Corner” debates • Rules: 1. You MUST pick a side • There is no ambivalence in science 2. You MUST share your opinion with someone in your corner EVERY round 3. As often as possible the person you share with should be someone NOT in your academic year 4. You MUST share your opinion with the class AT LEAST ONCE
