Data, Systems and Practices in CICO Originally by: Ali Hearn, IL PBIS Network Summarized by: Jessica Adelmann Van Buren Public Schools
Tier 2 5 -15% of population High efficiency Rapid response Small group interventions Some individualizing Ex: Rawsonville has 487, 12% = 58 students
CICO Generic Check In Check Out No individualization “Go to” Tier 2 intervention Meant to be a tiny nudge, not very intense 6 week cycle Goal: 80% of points 80% of the time
CICO 4 Critical Features Continuously available for student participation 2. Implemented within 3 school days of determination that the student should receive the intervention 3. Can be modified based on assessment outcome data (not to be done initially) 4. All staff, students and families are notified of the intervention 1.
CICO : Finding the challenges before they find you Why? What? Who? Where?
WHY Students, staff and families understand the WHY of the intervention Added layer of support Explain to staff (layering/triangle) Compare academic and behavioral interventions Not forever – no shaming or blaming
WHAT (its not) Make sure staff, students and families know the WHAT (it is not)! Not a tier 3 intervention Not an intervention to tell naughty kids more about why they are naughty Not an opportunity for staff to point out why students are IRresponsible, DISrespectful and UNsafe Another thing teachers have to do
WHAT (it is) An extension of Tier 1 Able to help support large number of kids (5 -15%) Re-boost of Tier 1 message Provides positive daily adult contact for kids who need a “bit more” Increases communication between staff and students and home
WHO Don’t forget the kids with internalizing characteristics for CICO Once staff learn that CICO are for naughty kids hard to change that mindset Students who need a little nudge Consider what “at-risk” means in your building
WHERE (will all the systems go? ) Where will kids check in/out With who Who will send letters home/data entry/ look at data Updates CICO Who looks at fidelity of intervention Who refers the kids
Training is half the battle Need administrator support Class time for CICO? Need staff support Another thing I have to do… Need well trained staff Circle the numbers without actually speaking to the child; Positive, positive!
Remember: Ideally 70% of kids on CICO should be responding to the intervention If less are responding, then ADULTS need to change system implementation to be more effective
