The programme offers you a unique opportunity to work in fast-moving field spanning math's and statistics, software engineering and communications whilst studying a degree in in Data Science. You will complete your studies with York St John University - selected to deliver the programme because of the strength of their data science course and the support they’ll offer to apprentices throughout your time on programme. Once complete, you will have an apprenticeship, a data science degree, and the experience of three years’ working in the Civil Service – putting you in a brilliant position to progress in your career from there. Development of this new degree-level apprenticeship in Data Science is critical for the Government Statistics Service and is a priority for the Civil Service. One of the Government Transformation Strategy 2017 priorities for 2020 is to “make better use of data to improve decision making, by building and expanding data science and analytical capability across government, for analysts and non-analysts alike. ”

In introducing this entry level route into the GSS, we hope to increase the diversity of the profession and encourage people from all backgrounds to join us. Additionally, it provides a great opportunity to increase our data science capability via distance learning, while also working on the job, and increasing understanding of the GSS and Civil Service. Working Pattern Full time, part time (minimum 30 hours) Salary will be dependant on what government department you are placed with. Probation New recruits to the Civil Service will be on probation for a period of 12 months. During this period you should remain in the post you were appointed to. Performance within the period will be assessed against the agreed objectives set by your line manager, as part of the normal appraisal process. Unsatisfactory performance during this period will result in termination of the appointment.
