Data Management Working Group Breakout Session 1 Agenda
Data Management Working Group Breakout Session 1
Agenda: - Intro to get on the same page with data management concepts - Intro to Data Management Working Group - Identify and prioritize the work we would like to do - Discuss how DMWG can contribute to advancing integrated science in the Bureau 2
The Solar System of Information Management, Data Governance, and Data Management Each are a unique concept, but relationships exist among them. 3
The first thing you’ll learn is that Data Management is applied in a lot of different ways. 4
A definition from DAMA. . . The official definition provided by Data Management Association International (DAMA) International, the professional organization for those in the data management profession, is: "Data Resource Management is the development and execution of architectures, policies, practices and procedures that properly manage the full data lifecycle needs of an enterprise. " 5
Data Governance? Data Management? The DAMA Dictionary of Data Management defines Data Governance as “The exercise of authority, control and shared decision making (planning, monitoring and enforcement) over the management of data assets. ” Data Governance is identified as the core component of Data Management, tying together the other 9 disciplines ● ● ● Designating accountability for information quality Enable better planning by supervisory staff Minimizing or eliminating re-work Optimize staff effectiveness Establish process performance baselines to enable improvement efforts Improving data security, also defining and verifying the requirements for data distribution policies https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=2 Pkoilg. USGS Science Data Lifecycle and DAMA Data Management is an overarching term that describes the processes used to plan, specify, enable, create, acquire, maintain, use, archive, retrieve, control, and purge data. These processes overlap and interact within each data management knowledge area. Actions vs. Knowledge Areas 7
Information Management? IM is a cycle of organizational activity: the acquisition of information from one or more sources, the custodianship and the distribution of that information to those who need it, and its ultimate disposition through archiving or deletion. 8
CMMI Data Management Maturity The DMM model outlines data process improvement across business lines, allowing executives to make better and faster decisions using a strategic view of their data. 9
DMWG Purpose Elevate the practice of data management throughout USGS, thus increasing the value and accessibility of USGS data and making integration possible. 10

How the DMWG Works ● Everyone is welcome ● 2 facilitators (currently Viv and Cassandra) ● Monthly webinars (2 nd Monday of the month) ○ Presentation(s) ○ Announcements ○ Discussion ● Sub. Teams ○ Smaller groups form around a topic ○ Meet for short period of time to produce a path forward on a current challenge ● Report out to monthly CDI main meeting (2 nd Wednesday of month) ● Maintain wiki space with meeting notes, recordings, etc 12
What We’ll Do Today…. ● We want to get at these questions: ○ ○ ○ How can we best contribute to enabling integrated science? What challenges are we facing that we can make progress on through the Working Group? What small teams should we think about leading this year? What kinds of presentations or discussion topics would you like to see in DMWG? What ideas do you have to make the DMWG even more relevant and helpful in your daily job? ● Here’s how: (45 minutes) ○ ● If ____ was easier, I could do my work in data management more efficiently. Instructions: ■ ■ ■ Use one post-it note per idea. Post the post-it on the data lifecycle where it makes the most sense Then we will form groups around each lifecycle concept and organize the ideas A spokesperson will articulate the ideas Facilitator will write them on the flipchart. We will then vote on the ideas with colored dots to prioritize. (the color of the dot means nothing). 13
What We’ll Do Today…. ● Discussion: (10 Minutes) ○ How should we structure the DMWG to work on these ideas? ■ ■ What kinds of presentations or discussion topics would you like to see in DMWG? What ideas do you have to make the DMWG even more relevant and helpful in your daily job? ● Discussion: (20 minutes) ○ If you were developing a roadmap for how USGS data management could better enable integrated science, what would be on it? 14
