Data Management: Why would I bother? . . . TU Delft, 20 September 2017 1

First things first… • Slides are available 3
The bigger picture – Open Data now mandatory in H 2020 grants 4
The bigger picture – Open Data now mandatory in NWO grants To make data that emerges from NWO-funded research as accessible and reusable as possible, NWO has decided to implement the data management policy in all NWO funding instruments with effect from 1 October 2016. 5
All these new requirements are sometimes met with immediate reactions • This is not my priority • People will steal my results! • My data is not interesting • The person who had the data left • Data management is a waste of time (and money) • It would take me 5 years to find all my data! 6
Yet another requirement? . . . Why would I bother? 7
Selfish benefits of data management and sharing 8
What if I stolen your laptop now? 9

How frequently do you have problems finding a specific research data file in your collection? 12
Why do we have problems finding data? 13

File naming In 3 years time would you know what these are? 18
OK. . . Maybe data management… But why sharing? . . . 19
Again, think about yourself • What if someone asks you for data supporting your publication? • What if someone asks you for data supporting your publication, 5 year after publication? • What if the request comes 10 years later? 20
Datasets available ‘on request’ are not available • Data availability decreases by 17% per year • Chance of email address working decreases by 7% per year http: //dx. doi. org/10. 1016/j. cub. 2013. 11. 014 21
Selfish reason: share once and don’t be bothered 22

Selfish reason: increase your impact and boost your online presence Exercise: Google yourself. What do you find? 24
But who looks in the repository? Google does!!! 25
Google searches the repository 26

TU Delft – frontrunner of Open Science and data stewardship “The world is facing challenges that our university of technology alone cannot meet. ” Karel Luyben, Rector Magnificus, TU Delft Good research data management is necessary for effective data sharing and greater openness 29
Dedicated Data Stewards to help you • 3 Data Stewards appointed: – Ci. TG – EWI – LR • There will be a Data Steward at every Faculty • Meet your Steward at the Open Science Roadshows at your department • Meantime: datastewards@tudelft. nl – We are there to help – reach out 30
Coming back to the bigger picture… 31
Decision makers realise that rewards system needs to change https: //cdn 1. euraxess. org/sites/default/files/policy_library/os-rewards 32 wgreport-final_integrated_0. pdf
Funding going preferentially to those who manage data well? Be the front-runner! Be the one eligible for grants in the future! 33
