Data Management Projects Data Management Framework Subcommittee Update
Data Management Projects Data Management Framework Subcommittee Update June 19, 2007
Data Management Project Reviews • FY 2007 -2009 Mainstem Systemwide Review Team • Sept. 2006 Data Management Workshop • DMFS • Draft NED Workplan • NED Fish and Wildlife Program Workgroup created • Draft Strategy for Data Management
MSRT Recommendations • Stream. Net – focus on developing a hierarchical geographic data structure that supports subbasin planning and recovery planning • IBIS – focus on hierarchical mapping of wildlife habitats to support subbasin planning and SOTR • CSMEP and PNAMP address data needs, how they should be collected, and identify data gaps • NED will help facilitate the efficient transfer of data Council held data management projects level funded until a comprehensive plan could be articulated for the Program
Data Management Workshop Sept. 2006 Recommendations: • address data gaps • improve timeliness of data sharing • focus on data priorities • improve QA/QC practices • develop more efficient data systems The results of this workshop was not helpful for Stream. Net in developing their SOW
Data Management Framework Subcommittee • Created to provide short term guidance to Stream. Net on data priorities • Continued to provide 1) discrete data needs for F&W Program and 2) determine what projects are needed to support Program reporting (SOTR) • Spring 2007 MAG directed DMFS to provide FY 08 -09 data management project funding recommendations
Draft NED Workplan Identified specific pilot projects to fill current gaps in data management for F&W Program • NED Portal channel steward • Web supported data integration • Develop best practices guidance QA-QC • Improve geo-referencing (NHI) • Tribal data support No scheduled CBFWA review of work plan
NED F&W Program Workgroup • Created to support development of a strategy document to support data management project recommendations • Merged with DMFS out of convenience • Using NED data management experience and DMFS data requirements knowledge to formulate a strategy • Presentation scheduled to NPCC in July
Federal Enterprise Architecture • Developed to coordinate data management between and within Federal agencies • Flexible structure supports continuity while drilling down from big picture (collaborative groups) to finer details (projects) • Forces thought about standards, business elements, goals, targets, transitions

Strategy • Level fund projects for FY 08 -09 to preserve resources • Restructure existing projects to address priorities (identify gaps) • Fund pilot efforts to fill immediate gaps (data coordinator, tribal data, habitat data) • Develop project specific frameworks in FY 08 • Be prepared in 2009 for a comprehensive data management plan for F&W Program
Next Steps • • • Release Strategy Document for review by DMFS and NED Workgroup (June 25) Develop project specific restructuring recommendations (week of June 25) Get CBFWA and NED approval of strategy (July 10) Get CBFWA approval of project recommendations (July 10) NED presentation at July Council meeting CBFWA recommendations/comments by July Council meeting?
