Data Management and the IR A Collaborative Approach
Data Management and the IR: A Collaborative Approach Josh Cromwell The University of Southern Mississippi DC Southeastern User Group Meeting 2016
Why Research Data? • Federally-funded research mandates • Lack of institutional solutions – Cal Poly (2012): ~5. 5% of researchers back up data on a university or departmental server – Southern Miss (2016): ~30% of researchers back up data on a university or departmental server – Silo problem? • Librarians’ familiarity with managing information resources
How Does It Work? • No “one size fits all” approach • Partnerships are key! – Vice President for Research – Campus IT – Office of Research Administration (or its version on your campus) – Partnerships across departments within library • Planning is crucial!
Data and the IR? No! • Example: Purdue Source: https: //purr. purdue. edu/
Data and the IR? Yes! • Example: University of Montana Source: http: //scholarworks. umt. edu/flathead/
Data and the IR? Somewhere In Between • Example: Southern Miss • A bit more about us… – Data Taskforce created Spring 2016 – Chaired by Head of Public Services – Composed of three Research Librarians, Head of Cataloging, Digital Lab Manager, and IR Coordinator – Charged with identifying and defining library’s role in a campus-wide data management solution

Some Questions to Ask • Who needs to be involved? • What existing policies need to be considered? – e. g. Who owns the data? • What services will you offer? – Think of the data lifecycle – Initial support and training, ongoing access and preservation, both? • How much will it cost? – Infrastructure – Additional staffing • Other?
