Data Analysis ? How to manage very large amounts of data and extract value and knowledge from them? ? ?

Data Analysis Data analysis is the process of bringing order, structure and meaning to the mass of collected data. It is a messy, ambiguous, time-consuming, creative, and fascinating process It does not proceed in a linear fashion; it is not neat.

Data Analysis The purpose of analyzing data is to obtain usable and useful information. The analysis, irrespective of whether the data is qualitative or quantitative, may: v describe and summarize the data v identify relationships between variables v compare variables v identify the difference between variables v forecast outcomes

Data Analysis TOOLS TO SUPPORT DATA ANALYSIS v Spreadsheet –simple to use, basic graphs v Statistical packages, e. g. SPSS, S, S+, R

Data Analysis Vs Analytics v According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, analysis is the separation of a whole into its component parts, and analytics is the method of logical analysis. v One way to distinguish the difference between analysis and analytics is to think in terms of past and future. v Analysis looks backwards over time, providing marketers with a historical view of what has happened. v Typically, analytics look forward to model the future or predict a result.

Data Science – A Definition Data Science is the science which uses computer science, statistics and machine learning, visualization and humancomputer interactions to collect, clean, integrate, analyze, visualize, interact with data to create data products.

Big Data

Big Data Walmart handles more than 1 million customer transactions every hour, which is imported into databases estimated to contain more than 2. 5 petabytes * of data — the equivalent of 167 times the information contained in all the books in the US Library of Congress. The volume of business data worldwide, across all companies, doubles every 1. 2 years, according to estimates (1 Petabyte = 100000000 B = 10005 B = 1015 B = 1 million gigabytes) Think of the hard drive on your computer at home having 500 gigabytes. Now multiply that by 2, 000!
