INTRODUCTION During this presentation, I will be comparing linear and dynamic medias of my own choice, I will be doing a trailer for a video game called Quake Live and a website called Steam workshop.

PURPOSE OF TRAILER AND TARGET AUDIENCE. • The linear product chosen is a trailer for Quake: Live, a video game on Steam. • This trailer was used to show what you’re buying and what you can do with what you buy. • Instead of showing animated cinematic scenes, it shows true gameplay. • It was a low budget trailer, but it didn’t lie or falsely advertise the game, which was launched in September 17 th 2014. • The game was free at launch, but since then the price has for some reason gone up to £ 4.

FEATURES OF TRAILER • The video at the start had text over a montage of gameplay which pointed out what game modes and arenas the game had. • It showed actual gameplay from a Quake Championship, not animations which really got the attraction of players who liked the previous Quake. • The video also had only background music and no commentary. • This trailer clearly worked and did what it was meant to do, as the like to dislike ratio was 1000 likes and 83 dislikes.

This text says that the game will be free to play on launch, anyone will be able to buy the game, since then however they have added a price tag. The final text explains that there is over 100 arenas (maps) to play on launch, all which are for free.

Ease of Access and Navigation Appropriateness of Content Use of Colour Balance and Mix of Components Strengths Weaknesses The trailer is easy to access and Non navigate as it is a very linear video with nothing to complicated within it. The trailer is appropriate as it shows Non in-game footage for the game it is advertising and suits the target audience. The use of colour is simple black Non background white text, except from the game footage which is of course the colour of what the game chooses. The video has a fine mix between text and video. The trailer is linear and therefore is not interactive, and it is not meant to be interactive. Interactivity Quality Non The video has a very good quality using 1080 p 60 FPS. Non

(LINEAR / QUAKE LIVE TRAILER) • This trailer is fit for purpose as it does what it is made to do which is to advertise the game Quake: Live. • The trailer meets the target audience by impressing previous players of the Quake franchise. • The trailer also manages to grab a new audience by showing in the description that the game will be free on launch to make people want to get it. • The trailer can also be understood by hearing impaired as it only uses text and not voice audio (only music audio).

The workshop is used for people who make content for games, e. g. mods, maps, etc. to publish it for other people to download and use in their game. • It also allows people to make something, which if the community likes it enough might be put into the game for everyone, e. g. a weapon skin.

STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES Ease of Access and Navigation Appropriateness of Content Use of Colour Balance and Mix of Components Interactivity Quality Strengths The navigation for the Steam Workshop is really simple. it has a navigation bar, a search bar a discussions (forums). And a lot of hyperlinks. You can order things from newest to popular etc. You change the language. Everything on there is appropriate as everything on the site is associated with Steam and the games on steam. The use of colour is good and simple it primarily uses 3 colours which are all different shades of blue so it goes together and doesn’t overwhelm you. Weaknesses No ways of changing colours if you’re colour-blind which many people are. There is not anything which can really be called inappropriate. It is all there for a reason. You could say because of the dark blue theme that it doesn’t stand out very much. Or maybe they should add an option way to lighten the website. It has a fine balance between Not anything to argue about everything such as images and for this it has a balance of all text things and is very well designed. FIT FOR PURPOSE / MEETS TARGET AUDIENCE (INTERACTIVE / STEAM WORKSHOP) • The workshops fits purpose as it does exactly what it needs to do which is allow developers to publish their work for people to use on the internet. • It also has a purpose of helping people practice and giving a chance of someone being hired by an actual company if they are good enough. • The target audience is met, being developers and players looking for something different by modifying their game.
