Daniel chapter 9 focus back on Israel When is 70 weeks longer than 70 years? (Answer) In Daniel chapter 9 the 70 week prophecy was for 490 years and the 70 year prophecy was for 70 years. l The 70 weeks prophecy gives a 2 nd opportunity to Israel. l Israel however crucifies the Messiah and God turns to the Gentiles in Daniel chapters 10 -12.
Daniel 9: 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; (hint) When did Babylon fell? – 539 BC Since Darius is a title, who is Darius here in Dan. 9: 1 and in Dan. 5: 31 and in 6: 1? – Darius in Dan. 5: 31; 9: 1 is identified as the Mede. History shows this was Cyaxares II the uncle and father-in-law to Cyrus the Persian. Cyrus conquered Babylon and made his father-in-law ruler over Babylon. – Daniel 6: 1 It pleased Darius (Cyrus) to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; This Darius in Dan. 6: 1 is not identified with the Medes therefore it is thought to be Cyrus the Persian.
When did the 70 year prophecy begin and end? Daniel 9: 2 In the first year of his reign (Darius the Mede = Cyaxares II) I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. Jeremiah 25: 11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. (“desolations” began in 607 – 70 years = 537 BC) It ended with Cyrus’ decree 537) – 539 BC Babylon fell and Cyrus made Darius the ruler but in 537 BC Darius died and Cyrus rules ending Jeremiah’s 70 years prophecy in 537 B. C. – Ezra 1: 1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and to put it in writing: (NIV) – 70 years before (607 BC) was the first invasion by Nebuchadnezzar in the 8 th year of Johoiachin. – Answer: It began in 607 BC and ended in 537 BC. 2 Kings 24: 12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers: and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign.
What about copying Daniel’s example to discern when Jesus will return? Daniel 9: 3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: Yes prayer, supplications with fasting show preparation and humility provide a good guide for us today in helping us to discern the prophecies when Jesus returns as a thief. What about the sackcloth and ashes as helping in our age? – Matthew 6: 1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. – Mark 12: 40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers:
Daniel 9: 4 And I prayed unto the LORD (3068) my God (430), and made my confession, and said, O Lord (136), the great and dreadful God (410), keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; § 3068 “Yahweh” = “He who shall be” and as proclaimed to Moses when God was about to deliver Israel, Ex. 3: 14. § 430 “Elohiym” = mighty ones but almost always used with a singular verb. (Jn. 17: 21) § 136 “Adonay” = plural root meaning rule, sovereignty or lordship. § 410 “EL” = mighty one and a title expressing power and frequently qualified by an adjective i. e. the Almighty EL, the jealous El, the merciful EL, the faithful EL and here the dreadful EL.
What is the basic principle here for God to hear our pray? Daniel 9: 5 We have sinned (example of bearing sin), and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: We must humbly acknowledge we are sinners including becoming sin bearers as Jesus, Daniel Nehemiah and Jeremiah. Isa. 53: 6; Neh. 1: 6, 7; Jer. 14: 7. Jeremiah 14: 7 O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
Was this true of Daniel? Daniel 9: 6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. No, but Daniel was a type of Christ and as such a sin bearer of their sins as also did Moses, Nehemiah, and Jeremiah. These all bore the consequences of Israel’s sin.
Daniel 9: 7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion (shame) of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee. “Confusion” 1322 bosheth {bo'-sheth} AV Heb. 12: 11 Now no shame 20, confusion 7, ashamed 1, greatly 1, chastening for the present shameful thing 1; 30 seemeth to be joyous, but The trespasses of others impact us but no matter grievous: nevertheless the setback, we acknowledge we are all in this afterward it yieldeth the together and we are clay and God the potter and peaceable fruit of all will work together for our good. Rm. 8: 28 righteousness unto them which are exercised Additional Trials come for we are lively stones thereby. being shaped for God’s temple, 1 Pe. 2: 5. The lesson is not to resist or murmur being shaped.
What here do we learn from Daniel’s prayer? Daniel 9: 8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him; 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. We depend upon God’s mercy and forgiveness. There must be a recognition, confession of sin, a frank admission not only for our self but sin bearers for family, ecclesia, and nation. We like Daniel must show sorrow, repentance, and faith in God’s mercy. James 5: 16 … The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Who asked Peter to pray for him?
What here do we learn from this part of Daniel’s prayer? Daniel 9: 11 -13 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God (Deu. 28& Lev. 26), because we have sinned against him. 12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth. Daniel was righteous but the consequences of Israel’s sin caused him to be taken into captivity and be made a eunuch in Babylon. We must recognize what has happened and understand we are sin bearers like Jesus, Jeremiah and Daniel and make the best of the situation while putting our faith in God.
When did the 70 year prophecy begin and end? Daniel 9: 2 In the first year of his reign (Darius the Mede = Cyaxares II) I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah (Jer. 25: 11) the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. – 70 years began (607 BC) which was the first invasion by Nebuchadnezzar in the 8 th year of Johoiachin and ended in 537 BC in Ezra 1: 1 with the decree of Cyrus to rebuild the temple which was two years after Daniel 9: 2. – Answer: 607 to 537 BC
Daniel 9: 14 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice. 15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly. The reason and principle is: “to whom much is given, much is required”. – Luke 12: 48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. – What is the exhortation here for us?
Give the reasons here why God heard Daniel’s prayer. Daniel 9: 16 -17 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us. 17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake. Daniel appeals to God’s righteousness. Jerusalem and Mt. Zion involved. Daniel confesses and bears the sin of his people. Jerusalem and Daniel’s people had been a reproach which was punishment over and above God’s punishment. Daniel now appeals because of the need for a sanctuary.
What are the reasons for Daniel’s prayer being powerful? Daniel 9: 18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, sake O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. Daniel appeals to hear, forgive and see what had become of Jerusalem Daniel appeals to God’s great mercies and for His sake. – God had prophesied (Jer. 29: 10) therefore God’s name was at stake. This provides an excellent example for our prayer as we plead for Jesus’ return that “God’s will, will be done on earth” which is going in the opposite direction today.
What is meant “caused to fly swiftly”? Daniel 9: 20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; 21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. (NAS changes as follows) 21 While I was speaking in prayer, then the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision previously, came to me in my extreme weariness about the time of the evening offering. ” – In favour of NAS is it gives insight to why the angel flew swiftly. It is thought Daniel was so utterly absorbed in prayer that his physical state was affective, paralleling Jesus’ prayer where his sweat was as great drops of blood, (Lk. 22: 44). – What do you think of some using this passage (“fly swiftly”) to show the angels have wings?
Daniel 9: 22 And he (Gabriel) informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. 23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to show thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. – It is thought to be Michael because of Dan 8: 15 -16 “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision” and also in another vision (Dan. 10: 13) these two angels are seen working together. Daniel 10: 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me (Gabriel) one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
Dan. 9: 24 Seventy weeks (70 x 7=490 years) are determined upon thy people (Israel) and upon thy holy city (Jerusalem), to finish the transgression (Jesus’ crucified), and to make an end of sins, (Jesus broke the power of king Sin to reign) and to make reconciliation for iniquity and to bring in everlasting righteousness (with forgiveness men accounted righteous by faith), and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy (Jesus). Ø Answer: 444 BC to 44 AD Ø There is strong evidence from historians and archaeologists that can pinpoint the "twentieth year of Artaxerxes" as being either 444 BC or 445 BC. (see Neh. 2: 1 for 465 – 20 = 445 or 424 + 20 =444 BC). • Nehemiah 2: 1 … in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: … Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. Ø “Artaxerxes I Longimanus, ruler of the Persian Empire, 465424 BC. He was the son of Xerxes I, Esther's husband. (Ency. Britannica vol. 2 p. 500, 1968) Ø 70 x 7=490 years added from 445/444 BC = about 44 AD. The 70 years ended when God called Cornelius in 44 AD bringing in the time of the Gentiles and taking the kingdom from Israel, Mt. 21: 43.
Biblical supporting the DAY FOR YEAR principle Ø Numbers 14: 34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. Ø Ezekiel 4: 6 And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year. Ø Luke 13: 32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
• Revelation 11: 2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months (42 X 30 = 1260). • Revelation 11: 3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth (1260). • Revelation 12: 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days (1260). • Revelation 12: 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent (360 + 360 X 2 + 360/2 = 1260).
Daniel 9: 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem (445/444 BC under Artaxerxes, Neh. 2: 1 -8) unto the Messiah the Prince (Jesus) shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks (69 weeks = 7 X 69=483 years): the street shall be built again, and the wall, (ties start of 70 weeks to Nehemiah when wall and street were built) even in troublous times. V. 27 … “and in the midst of the week. . ” Ø Ø Ø 69 weeks x 7= 483 years from Artaxerxes’ 20 th year = 445/444 BC, when Nehemiah (2: 1) was before him. Ø 483 years from 445 BC = 38 AD -1 = 37 AD -3. 5 = 33. 5 AD + v. 27 “midst of the week = 33. 5 AD when Jesus anointed for his burial. In the midst of 69 th week (Jesus killed) + rest of that week 3. 5 years = 37 AD when Paul the apostles to the gentiles was called by Jesus. This prophecy ends with the 70 th week added to the 69 th week giving 70 weeks (490 years). 445/444 BC + 490 years = -1= 44 AD when God called Cornelius bringing in the time of the Gentiles and taking the kingdom from Israel, Mt. 21: 43.
Daniel 9: 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem (445/444 BC under Artaxerxes, Neh. 2: 1 -8) unto the Messiah (“anointed” Mt. 26: 12) the Prince (Jesus) shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks (69 weeks X 7 = 483 years): the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Ø 444 BC to AD 33 = 477 years -1 (because BC zero and AD zero are the same) = 476 years. 476 x 365. 24 = 173, 855 days. Ø This checks for 62 weeks + 7 weeks = 69 weeks x 7 = 483 years x 360 days/yr. = 173, 880 days which is 25 days short however Passover varies from March to April.

Daniel 9: 27 And he (Jesus) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: (Jesus’ ministry + 3. 5 years + 3. 5 with many “above 500 brethren at once”, 1 Co. 15: 6) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, (with Jesus’ death, law done away) and for the overspreading of abominations (by Rome & Moslems) he shall make it (temple AD 70) desolate, even until the consummation, (Jesus’ return) and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate (Jewish nation). This understanding of the Gospels is difficult to reconcile with the tradition that holds the Last Supper took place on the first night of Passover which is defined in the Torah to be the 14 th of Nisan. Furthermore, at that time, the date of Passover was set by the court in Jerusalem based upon testimony of witnesses. It was not until after 500 AD that the calendar was changed to be based upon calculation. Therefore, it is not possible to state on which day of the week the 14 of Nisan occurred for any year before 500 without historical documents that attest to a particular day of the week.
