Daily Behaviors & Technology Use Goal: Investigate possible associations between cell phone screen time and caloric consumption.
Big Problem How does daily technology use affect us? Technology and cell phones have become integrated with our daily lives Mindless eating may play a role in how phone use affects eating behaviors Will mindless eating cause greater caloric intake throughout the day? Does mindless eating affect which macronutrients are most consumed (ex. , fat)?
Our Research The goal is to investigate the topic of cell phone use and eating patterns, which has received inadequate attention Participants use the My. Fitness. Pal and Screen Time apps on their i. Phones for three consecutive days My. Fitness. Pal: Tracks calories eaten throughout the day Screen Time: Tracks phone usage throughout the day
Approaches Participants are recruited through social media and email lists We collect My. Fitness. Pal and Screen Time data in the form of screenshots Screenshot data is emailed to us by participants Screenshot examples with numbers we collect can be seen in the next slides Data is manually input to SPSS for later analysis Data is double-entered and checked for input errors We are comparing: 1. Overall screen time and how the screen time is spent 2. Entertainment, work, etc. Food eaten throughout the day
Data Sources from Screenshots My. Fitness. Pal Screen Time Total calories consumed daily Total daily screen time Total calories consumed per meal Screen time per app category Four meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks Nutritional content of food eaten per meal Ex. , games, productivity, social networking Hourly screen time throughout the day
Example My. Fitness. Pal Data Total daily calories consumed Total calories for breakfast Total calories for dinner Total calories for lunch Total calories for snacks
Example Screen Time Data Total daily screen time Comprehensive list of screen time by app category Total screen time per type of app
