Cézanne Paul Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence in France on 19 th January, 1839. His father had a successful business as the co-founder of a French banking firm. In 1856, Cézanne began having drawing and painting lessons – though his father disapproved.
The Young Man To please his father, Cézanne studied law at university, but he also continued to study art. However, his father later allowed Paul to go to Paris, and supported his decision to be an artist.
Early Cézanne In Paris, Cézanne’s early work was intense and melancholic. He was riddled with self doubt, despite his artistic friends seeing great promise in his work.

Rejection Cézanne‘s paintings were rejected from the galleries – called salons. This caused him much disappointment. He became friends with the artist Pissarro, and in 1872 they both travelled to Pontoise, on the outskirts of Paris, and painted outside. Here Cézanne realised that art came from nature. His paintings suddenly became more vibrant, with a new sense of energy. Camille Pissarro
Impressionism In 1874, Cézanne’s confidence grew as his work was part of an exhibition of all the work by artists who had been rejected in the past. The style of the artists in the exhibition, was referred to as Impressionism. They painted by sitting in fields, looking at sunsets and flowers, and using nature in their works of art. “Painting from nature is not copying the object; it is realizing one's sensations. Solitary Painting Cézanne was only involved in two Impressionist exhibitions. He preferred to work alone and his style was changing. He met Van Gogh and was influenced by his work. Cézanne was adding volume, colour and movement into his paintings.

In the End Paul Cézanne was caught in a storm while painting in a field. He walked home two hours later and collapsed. A passing driver took him home, but Cézanne died a few days later. He died on 22 nd October, 1906 from pneumonia, in his hometown of Aix. Cézanne created more than 900 oil paintings and 400 watercolours during his lifetime. Pablo Picasso stated, “Paul Cézanne was my one and only master. ” and painters Paul Klee and Henri Matisse, and many others, have recognised Cézanne’s artistic genius.
