Major Impact and Extent of Damage by FANI Report (as on 15 th May 2019) § 14 Districts affected namely Angul, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Khordha, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh and Puri. Assessment by Doctors For You (DFY) § Doctors For You deployed its response team to Odisha on 4 th May, 2019 Anganwadi Centre Assessment Village Assessment § DFY participated in meetings and discussions with Inter Agency Group, Government Stakeholders, Community and other organizations working in the field § Field visits and data collection in affected villages of Nimapara Block, Puri District and CDA Colony, Cuttack CDA Colony Assessment Stakeholders Coordination Meeting § >30 affected Anganwadi Centres (AWC) were assessed in Puri and Cuttack Districts

Key Findings and Interventions Damaged Anganwadi Centres Contamination of Hand-pumps Damage Shelter Water logging near Slum Areas Key Findings § Damaged infrastructure and services in Anganwadi Centres § Contamination/damage of Drinking Water Sources § Requirement of non-food items like, cloths, mosquito nets and blankets, shelter kits and kitchen kits in affected villages § Especially the slum dwellers were highly prone to diseases like diarrhoea, dengue and malaria because of water logging and poor sanitary unhygienic conditions Interventions § Relief Distribution § Water, Sanitation and Hygiene § Creation of Child Friendly Spaces

Relief Distribution – Mosquito Nets and Water Filter Mosquito Net Distribution, Imampada, Cuttack Mosquito Net Distribution, Balmiki Nagar, Cuttack “Living under extremely poor sanitary conditions and unhygienic surroundings followed by floods during monsoons, the slum dwellers are highly prone to diseases like diarrhoea, dengue and malaria. Water filters was of utmost concern to provide safe drinking water and especially for children in Anganwadi centres who are more vulnerable to disease. ” With donation received form Naraindas Morbai Budhrani Trust (NMBT) DFY distributed 1000 Mosquito Nets to households and 30 Water Filters in AWCs of CDA Slum Colonies in Cuttack Filter Distribution Krushak Bazar AWC, Cuttack Filter Distribution, Baba Tilak Nagar, AWC, Cuttack

Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) “Sanitary and hygiene conditions are extremely poor in the affected areas as toilets have been collapsed and damaged. Drinking water sources have been heavily contaminated; even the village ponds have fallen trees, debris and dead aquatics” Disinfection of Hand-pump Cleaning of Overhead Tank in City Hospital, Cuttack Cleaning of 30000 litres Overhead Tank, CHC Bentak Distribution of Soaps to Children After the Cyclone DFY deployed its WASH team who were involved in cleaning of water tanks in health facilities; repairing of damaged water pipeline and hand-pumps; and disinfection of water sources. The team also distributed soaps and involved children in the WASH awareness activities

Child Friendly Spaces “After FANI the daily operational activities of AWCs got hampered. The enrolment and attendance of Children were low and provision of daily meal was a challenge after the cyclone” Story Telling by Anganwadi Worker to Students Display of Painting by AWC Students Hand Washing Practice by Students in AWC Distribution of WASH Kits in AWCs To promote safety, better mental and physical health, DFY adopted 5 Anganwadi Centers and converted them into Child Friendly Space (CFS). In the program 180 children were enrolled. With each of the CFS, DFY has attached a local volunteer who along with AWW worked on increasing attendance in the center through sequence of activities.

Way Forward Destruction of Fisherman Boat because of FANI DFY responded to FANI affected communities for >1. 5 months. Following are some of the way forward measures after the Cyclone – § With temperatures soaring to 45 degree Celsius, there is a need to create child-friendly spaces where the kids can play, read and perform extracurricular activities when their parents are engaged in restoration work. Creation of energy efficient, environment friendly Model Anganwadi’s § Retrofitting of damaged schools and community infrastructures with cyclone resistant design § WASH interventions for long term behaviour changes and facilitating restoration of damaged WASH infrastructures in villages § To promote various livelihood programmes for the affected communities (fishermen, coconut producers, wage earners etc. ) § Promotion of kitchen garden to ensure food security of marginalized communities § Training and Capacity Building programmes in Disaster Management for different stakeholders
