Program Level Status • Spacecraft continues to perform extremely well overall and operations continue

Program Level Status • Spacecraft continues to perform extremely well overall and operations continue to be routine (despite very high solar activity in Oct-Nov) – Swapped Inertial Reference Units in July; retaining noisy gyro as backup unit. First major unit swap of the mission went smoothly. – Three minor anomalies occurred (details follow) – No safe modes have occurred since last report (last safemode 1999) • Science planning, data processing and distribution are proceeding smoothly • Cycle 6 Call for Proposals was issued 12/15/03 • 16 press releases, 1 video release and 1 SSU in last 6 months. • Independent Implementation Review (IIR) was held 11/18/03 with no findings and 2 observations. No significant actions. • CXC contract transitioned smoothly from the old to new contract on 9/1/03 • The plan for meeting the out-year budget profile is on-track for FY 04 with no significant near-term budget or staffing concerns • Congratulations to Harvey and Martin on winning the Rossi! 12 January 2004 CXC Status Report/CUC 3

Operations Status • Spacecraft – Completed swap from IRU-1 to IRU-2 on 19 July

Operations Status • Spacecraft – Completed swap from IRU-1 to IRU-2 on 19 July to retain the use of gyro 1 as a backup in the event of safemode. – Implemented a software patch to decrease the number of unwanted radiation shutdowns on radiation belt entry - no cases since patch – Nominal summer eclipse season – Cooled Aspect Camera CCD from – 10 deg to – 15 deg to reduce warm pixels. Dark current calibration indicates expected reduction of ~50% – Impulse event thought to be from a Leonids meteoroid; no indication of adverse affect on systems – EPHIN supply voltage current limited at high temperatures; attitudes are being selected to avoid high temperatures – An Optical Bench Assembly heater zone was detected on 12/22/03 in apparent “stuck on” state resulting in 3 -4 deg F increase temperature. No science impact seen. Fault tree under development. 12 January 2004 CXC Status Report/CUC 4

Operations Status • 8 executions of SCS 107 to halt observing due to high solar activity – Extremely high solar activity in Oct-Nov resulted in a significant decrease in observing efficiency (reduced from ~70% to ~45%) – Increased ACIS CTI degradation is expected (~1 year of budget) • 4 load interrupt TOOs successfully observed • Science Instruments operating extremely well overall – ACIS bakeout decision expected ~March 04 for possible ~April bakeout – HRC –Y shutter failed to insert due to motor controller selection failure; anomaly under investigation. Operations impact low since shutter is rarely used. Flight Software mod will limit mechanism motions during safeing – Investigating using HRC anticoincidence shield as alternate radiation detector in response to EPHIN thermal trend • Completed relocation of the ASVT (spacecraft simulator) from the West Coast to the OCC. Transfer resulted in more direct access to equipment for procedure testing and patch development. 12 January 2004 CXC Status Report/CUC 5

Aspect Camera Performance (cooled CCD) 12 January 2004 • Dark current decreased ~50% following cool-down • Distribution before cool down (red) shifts left after cool-down (black); early mission distribution (green) • Fraction of warm pixels (>200 electrons/s) decreased sharply following cool-down • Result is improved centroiding CXC Status Report/CUC 7
