The 4 year plan is a guide to help choose and track courses. Use it as a graduation/UC/CSU checklist. It is available on the CVHS website or in the Counseling Office.

CVHS COURSE LIST Use the course list to complete your planning guide, your time management tracker, and your 2019 -2020 registration form.

Complete the Time Management Tracker Use the estimated times on the course list to calculate the homework hours for the 2019 -20 courses you choose. Focus on BALANCE: School Extra-curricular Daily Living Total hours = 168

Complete the Grade Level Registration Form All students take 6 classes each semester. (Some Seniors needing <50 credits may opt for 5 classes. ) Complete each subject section on your planning sheet for next year. NOTE: If you are planning to take a class in Summer School, indicate intent to enroll on your Registration sheet and complete summer forms when available!

Completing the Registration Form • Answer the questions at the top of the form about post high school goals, career/major interests, and Career Education (CTE) pathways • 10 th-12 th grade forms include questions about graduation, ”a-g” requirements, and GCC Dual Enrollment/Jump Start • If offered, are you willing to take a “ 0” period class? The maximum number of classes would still = 6.

English • Circle the desired English or indicate ELD level. • Placement is ultimately based upon the grades you earn this year. • Counselors will confirm your choices and eligibility before you are placed in the class.

Math CV requires all students to be enrolled in math for all 4 years. • Circle or indicate your next math placement request. • GUSD has transitioned to the Integrated Math I, III sequence. • Algebra 2/Alg 2 Honors will no longer be offered next year. • Integrated II and III Accelerated will be offered. • Counselors will confirm prerequisites before you are placed in any accelerated/Honors/AP classes. • Submit a waiver, if necessary. • Seniors are expected to be enrolled in a math course-discuss appropriate level with your counselor

9 th Grade: Health/Social Science • In the 9 th grade Health/Social Science section, circle Health and Human Geography. -Human geography is not a graduation requirement. If you take health during the summer, both Health and Human Geography will be replaced with a year-long elective. • If you plan on taking Health during summer, check the box for “summer”. More info will be available on the website. • Complete Summer registration forms in February or March. • Health and Human Geography will be preloaded on the portal. • Counselors will replace Health and Human Geography with an alternate course AFTER summer school enrollment is confirmed.

Social Science (10 th -12 th) • Circle the desired level of social science • If you plan on taking Social Science in summer, check the box, and complete summer registration in February or March. • Counselors will confirm you’ve met the prerequisites before you are placed in AP classes. • Register for the desired course in the student portal as if summer school does not exist. Alternates will be adjusted after SS is confirmed.

Social Science- th 12 Grade • American Government (6100 D) and Economics (6131 D) are both one semester classes. • “Online” Am. Gov’t/Econ class meets in class once a week (M or W) for tests/quizzes during “ 0” period. Students must have good attendance, good grades, and be able to work independently. -Enter Am. Gov’t (6100 P) and Economics (6131 P) in the computer. • AP Government- Register for AP Gov’t 1 and AP Gov’t 2. The curriculum/course title will cover Economics standards in the Fall. • AP Economics-Register for AP Econ 1 and AP Econ 2 in the computer. The curriculum/course title will cover Am. Gov’t standards in the Fall. Notes for ” 0” period AP Econ: Check the box on the registration form & add “No Class 6 th Fall/Spring” in the portal. Remove the “no 0 period Fall/Spring”.

PE: 9 th and 10 th • 9 th: Circle PE, Yoga, AFJROTC, Dance, Marching Band or Drill Team. • Sports, Int/Adv Dance, and Pep Squad have “try-outs”. If you plan to try out for next year, please check the bulletin for dates and more information. • 9 th: Register for both semesters of your PE choice in the student portal. Please do not pre-register for a sport or pep squad. • 10 th: Circle the desired course or write in a sport. IF you were on the team this year, register for the sport online. • 11 th and 12 th graders may take PE or a sport for elective credit Athletic Information Night: Monday, May 20 th, 6: 30 p. m. , CVHS Main Gym Counselors will consult lists from coaches for all sports.

Science CV requires all students to be enrolled in science for 3 years. 9 th grade: Circle Biology or Medical Biology • Medical Biology embeds medical and health related topics into the general biology curriculum. It focuses on preparation for the Academy of Science and Medicine but it is not required as a prerequisite for the Academy. • If you successfully complete Biology in summer school, the counselors will adjust your schedule to Chemistry in July. 10 th grade: Circle or write in the desired science course. • If you are currently taking Biology and passing with a C or better, you should choose Chemistry. If not, consider repeating Biology or taking Earth/Space.

Science-continued 11 th grade: You must complete your life science (Biology or Med Bio) and physical science (Earth Space, Chemistry, or Physics) requirements before choosing a different science elective course. • Notes to consider: – Physiology Honors, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, or AP Environmental Science all require A/B grades in both Biology and Chemistry – AP Physics 2 requires A/B in AP Physics 1 – AP Physics C requires completion of AP Physics 1 &2 12 th grade: Science is not required if you have fulfilled the life and physical science graduation requirements.

Application & Audition Classes v If you want to take any special audition or application class, write it on your registration form with alternates. v It is YOUR RESPONSIBILTY to contact the teacher. v Check the CVHS website for application information, audition dates, and DEADLINES. v Counselors will check the teacher lists before placing you in the class.

Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Courses • Must sign and submit an AP/Honors Contract • Must sign a waiver if you do not meet recommended pre-requisites (A/B grades) • Do not overload with AP/Honors courses • Consider your PSAT scores and AP Potential reports (current 10 th and 11 th graders) • UC/CSU only count a total of 8 semester bonus points when weighting GPAs

AP CAPSTONE DIPLOMA • AP Seminar + AP Research + 4 other AP classes/tests w/scores of 3 or higher = AP Capstone Diploma – 10 th, 11 th, 12 th grade only – Must take Seminar and Research in a 2 year progression – more information on www. collegeboard. org

IF you are requesting an Honors/AP level course and do not meet the recommended CVHS or GUSD pre-requisites, complete and attach a waiver to your registration form. Waiver Form ALL FORMS MUST BE SIGNED.

CTE Classes and Pathways Career Technical Education https: //www. gusd. net/cte • Designed to give practical, hands-on experience in the work place. • CV Pathways include: Graphic Communications, Engineering, Cinematography, Computer Science, Stage Arts, Sports Medicine, and the Medical Academy • Consider including a CTE Pathway in your 4 year plan. • CTE classes offered after school or on weekends include Water Safety, Cosmetology, and Game Design. – Sign up for extra CTE classes in the fall with your counselor. – See Ms. Tuason regarding Academy courses.

Check required classes for each grade. Check Cal State/UC or other college requirements. Check math flow charts to determine next course. Talk to friends and teachers about the content of the classes. Check the online Course Catalog on student. gusd. net. Sign and submit AP/Honors contracts and any necessary waivers.

Online Registration/Q Student Connection Ø ALL students will submit course requests online through Student Connection student. gusd. net for the 2019 -20 school year. Ø A Power. Point and a video explaining the process are posted in the Registration section of the CVHS Counseling website Ø Students can reset passwords on student. gusd. net Ø Students who do not enter courses online will be given last priority for courses. Ø If you do not have a “future” status (permit students) write a note on the top of your registration form.

Online Registration • Submit all course requests ONLINE prior to returning your registration form. • Counselors will meet individually with all current CV students to review everything and make any adjustments. • Any requests for changes after meeting with the counselor must be submitted on a Change Request Form no later than May 24 th. • Change Request Forms will be available online and in the counseling office after spring break.

Return Forms Where: To your English teacher (or History teacher for current 8 th graders) When: By the due date listed. (Late forms should be returned directly to your counselor. ) What to Include: ü 2019 -2020 Registration form with parent & student signatures. NO CHANGES after May 24 th, 2019 NO TEACHER REQUESTS ü The master schedule is built by the administrators and schedules are generated by a computer program. ü Counselors only look at conflicts. ü With 3, 000 students at CVHS it is like an 18, 000 piece puzzle. ü A change in one class creates a domino effect for all other classes.

Summer Possibilites • Visit college campuses and take a tour! • Begin preparing resume and personal statement essays for college applications. • Take Summer School (if necessary or desired). • Consider job shadowing, volunteer work, internships or a part-time job. • Relax and have fun!
